Veg stir fry help...
24 Apr 2013, 21:08
Tomorrow is my second fasting day of the week and have got myself a pack of stir fry veg (160 calories!). What I really want to know is, how can I cook it without adding many more calories and so that it tastes good? I don't really like the stir fry sauces (plus they are loaded with calories!).. can I just do it in 1cal spray oil? Not very good at this cooking malarky! Had a tin of soup on my first fast day and it didn't fill me up at all so wanted to try something different. Any help greatly appreciate!! Thanks

Not sure you can add anything and not add calories! Except maybe water? ;)
Seriously though, try a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce (the large bottles from Asian food stores tend to have far fewer calories than things like Amoy), a teaspoon of ground ginger and one of garlic powder.
You could also add a little chili powder if you like it hot.

I used to always use oil when doing stir fry but I'm at the point where I just season my veggies and skip the oil and more or less steam fry. Everyone is different so just experiment. Sometimes I go with oregano or basil but a lot of time I like to kick it up with hot peppers to stimulate the senses ! Have fun with it ...

I second Moogie - some soy sauce and a touch of chilli / ginger would do it for me. Hope you enjoy it and find it more filling/satisfying than the soup :clover:

I usually add soy sauce, a tiny bit of sesame oil and garlic or you can also add a bit of stock, 1 cup of vegetable stock is only about 20 calories and you don't need that much.

Before you put the veg in the wok, dry roast 1/2 tsp of cumin seeds, same of fennel seeds, chilli flakes and a sprinkling of course ground black pepper. When you start to smell the spices, they are done.

Then I like to use a couple garlic cloves (13cal for 3) and toward the end of cooking drizzle over 1/2tsp of Sesame oil (20 cal)

works really well with shredded cabbage (200g), finely sliced carrots (50g) and cubes of beetroot (50g) and finely diced chicken (50g).

Without the chicken I (the app on my phone) worked it out at 150kcal .. with the chicken 210. It's a big plateful !

cheers
Si

I used half a bag of stirfry vegs (79 calories) on Mon but I steamed them and had a piece of braising steak (250 calories) on top with a spoonful of the gravy from the casserole I had made for family. Followed by a 10 calorie Hartley jelly and a black coffee & kept me going until next morning. (100 calories at lunch ) . Good luck :clover:
Am going to use rest tomorrow with either grilled chicken or fish....can't wait

I'm having stir fry tonight, too. I'm looking forward to the huge pile of vegetables. I use fresh ginger, garlic and soy sauce. I cook the chicken in a tsp of olive oil (30 cal).

I cooked the veg in 2 sprays of 1cal spray oil, and then when I dished it up on my plate I had 1 serving (15ml/6cal) of French vinaigrette salad dressing which worked really well :)

I will do up a stir fry using chicken broth instead of oil or any other sauce. Add a bit of sea salt and fresh ground pepper. YUM!
