On the road to a healthier me

Blood tests

by AiriR on 29 Jun 2013, 14:00

I had blood tests done last Monday. Has been years (about seven I believe!) since last time so was long overdue I guess. I had thought to wait until I'm at my target weight in another couple of months but had to see my GP about something else and she persuaded me. She was very impressed by my weight loss and asked me how I did it; I told her I'm doing 5:2 and she commented she has other patients doing it too and seemed quite positive about it which was great.

Anyway, went back yesterday to hear the results. Can't say I was really surprised to hear that my cholesterol was high, 7.5 (has always been a bit of an issue for me the same as it was for my Mum). Triglycerides were 2.5 and HDL 1.27, so no good news there at all. : ( The doc and I agreed that I would try and increase my good cholesterol with some dietary changes and taking fish oil, and get re-tested later in the year. I was also found to be badly deficient in vitamin D which is apparently the case with a lot of Australians, ironically. (We really seem to have taken the message about the dangers of being in the sun seriously!) Everything else was fine: kidney/liver/thyroid function, iron and glucose levels, blood pressure etc. I am not worried; the doc showed me a cardiovascular risk assessment chart and I'm in the lowest risk category on that, and continuing to lose weight (and fasting I believe) can only be a good thing. I haven't felt this good physically in years!

After 15 weeks on 5:2 my weight loss is at 13.5 kg and I'm really enjoying clothes shopping again. Can't tell you how nice it feels to not have to head to the 'plus size' department to find something that fits me! I'm still 6.5-8.5 kg from my goal weight but for the first time in ages I feel good about how I look. Can't say it often enough: 5:2 works and I love it!

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Wonderful to feel so positive about yourself Airi- new clothes and a spring in your step :) I suspect the cholesterol will even out over time, but with no other problems in your tests, you are right it is not something to get in a panic about. There are lots of suggestions for pro HDL foods- was looking the other week for myself, easy to incorporate more oats, walnuts, fish of course :)

Eating salmon more often is certainly no hardship for me! : D Am also having walnuts as snacks and oat porridge with blueberries for breakfast five days a week, plus taking fish oil capsules so we'll see if that helps. Will have the cholesterol re-tested later in the year.

You're doing brilliantly too I see, congrats! Those red pants must not be too far off now...
