On the road to a healthier me

Back in the healthy weight range

by AiriR on 13 Nov 2013, 00:18

Today marks exactly eight months (35 weeks) since I started 5:2 on March 13, with a BMI of 32.79 and weighing 85 kg (13 st 5.39 or 187.39 pounds). Today I weigh 64.2 kg (10 st 1.54 or 141.54 pounds) and my BMI is 24.77. My goal weight is 63 kg so I'm almost there. I feel absolutely fantastic - Greenmonster quoted Mimi Spencer in her post yesterday and that sums it up perfectly for me too - "light, lean and alive". I honestly did not even dare dream of getting to this point so soon but am of course beyond thrilled!

How did I do it? I put my stats in Moogie's wonderful Progress Tracker and got a TDEE value (I use the sedentary value; I do walk a fair bit as I don't drive and do yoga but no other exercise). I eat to my TDEE on 4 days a week. One day a week I do a no-calorie liquid fast, and one day a week I only have dinner (below 500 calories). The remaining one day I eat absolutely anything my heart desires. I log all my TDEE days on MyFitnessPal because I like how it makes me...

Almost there

by AiriR on 16 Oct 2013, 11:39

I haven't done an entry here in a while. I'm still happily 5:2ing and now within 2.8 kg (just over 6 pounds I think) of my final target, seven months after embarking on this life-changing journey. I am way beyond pleased at my success and really enjoying being this weight again, after so many years. The Progress Tracker tells me that if I keep going like I have been, I will reach my goal in another five weeks - can't quite believe that I am so close. To be honest, at this point I am not too fussed about when I actually get to goal because I know I will, and I have already made a huge difference to my health by losing the 19 kg/almost 3 stone.

I have arrived where I am by eating real food and continuing to enjoy my life but just being more mindful of what I eat and when. I enjoy chocolate and wine and icecream and have been quite surprised by what I can actually have and still stay within my TDEE, even now when it's under 1500. I do two fasts a week, one of them a zero-calorie one, and...

Still here and doing brilliantly

by AiriR on 21 Aug 2013, 07:10

So I went away for five days, during which I gave absolutely no thought to what I ate and drank, other than to really enjoy it. I did my usual Thursday fast the day before I left, missed the Monday fast and got back into 5:2 on Wednesday. My weigh-in day is Wednesday and out of curiosity I did weigh myself, although I didn't enter the result in the Progress Tracker. I weighed 2.4 kg (about 5.3 pounds) more than the week before, before my trip. Exactly one week later today, after a week of being back to 5:2, I have lost the 2.4 kg plus 400 g (nearly a pound). Have I mentioned before how much I love 5:2?

I had a fantastic time while I was away, went to a festival of sorts with a friend and we dressed up in 19th century-style clothing. Six months ago, 17 kg heavier, prior to 5:2, I would never have had the confidence to do that. Now I loved being stopped by people who complimented me on my outfit...

Progress

by AiriR on 17 Jul 2013, 12:47

With today's weigh-in, my BMI dropped below 27 and my weight is now below 70 kg (154.3 pounds) for the first time in ages. I still have 5 kg (about 11 pounds) to go to my initial goal and it's kind of surprising to me that I'm here at this point, already. Obviously when I started on 5:2 back in March, I was hoping it would work well for me but I don't think I dared hope for the kind of success I've had. A friend commented on a photo of me on Instagram last week, saying I looked 'tiny'- I know I'm far from tiny but it did feel nice to hear that. And I'm really enjoying how I can take anything out of my wardrobe now, put it on and like how I look in the mirror. Shopping is once again fun, and I head straight for the bright colours, not feeling a need to 'hide' in black anymore. I feel like I have my life back and it's strange because I don't think I fully realised how much of an impact the extra weight was having on my life.

In three weeks I'm going away for the weekend, attending a special...

Blood tests

by AiriR on 29 Jun 2013, 14:00

I had blood tests done last Monday. Has been years (about seven I believe!) since last time so was long overdue I guess. I had thought to wait until I'm at my target weight in another couple of months but had to see my GP about something else and she persuaded me. She was very impressed by my weight loss and asked me how I did it; I told her I'm doing 5:2 and she commented she has other patients doing it too and seemed quite positive about it which was great.

Anyway, went back yesterday to hear the results. Can't say I was really surprised to hear that my cholesterol was high, 7.5 (has always been a bit of an issue for me the same as it was for my Mum). Triglycerides were 2.5 and HDL 1.27, so no good news there at all. : ( The doc and I agreed that I would try and increase my good cholesterol with some dietary changes and taking fish oil, and get re-tested later in the year. I was also found to be badly deficient in vitamin D which is apparently the case with a lot of Australians, ironically....
