I don't want to be discouraging, Bobshouse, but I have exactly those reservations. Initially what I loved so much about 5:2 was permission to eat what I like - bread, cakes, cream, cheese etc etc. on 5 days a week. I cling to this. I am not prepared to diet, not ever again. I know it won't work for me. If I take weight off by doing without cake etc, I will put it back on because I am simply not prepared to live a life without cake etc. Living as you do in rural France - how could you ever replace baguette with rice cakes. The whole idea is preposterous!
You're right. It won't work if it's considered punishment or life long deprivation.
The idea of low carb it is to get some feel for the amount that you CAN eat without causing cravings, a plateau (if you've more weight to lose), or worse, gain weight if you are in maintenance. Once you've learned the amount that avoids these issues for you, it's easy step to apply that knowledge to your favorite foods.

Thanks ladies. It is how I feel really. Eating rice cakes is punishment for me...fresh baguette and camembert haunts me! I don't think I am a slave to the carb monster but I do enjoy my cereal and toast for breakfast on feed days. I feel I am over complicating things by reducing carbs when I am very happy with just fasting. The problem is I read all that is posted and it makes me feel I need to change. Experience has taught me I cannot succeed by banning stuff and finding weird foods is impossible here. I also have a very limited budget and have to shop carefully. A baguette at 49cents is affordable and does us both for lunch. Rice cakes are expensive as they are only available on the organic shelf. So, the chickens will feast on organic rice cakes today and I am going to ignore all the threads about anything other that fasting.
Thank you for helping me to see where I was going!

And baguettes are made locally and are part of the culture. Rice cakes are made from rice grown on the other side of the planet, highly processed and transported to France. It doesn't make ecological sense!
I'm glad you have come back to a simple 5:2. Let's enjoy food. Let's fast 2 days or 3 if you want to, and on the other days, rejoice. You live in a land of wonderful food with hundreds of years of tradition. It's one of the reasons perhaps that you live where you do. The camembert is locally made and I would love to try it!

Chickens enjoyed the rice cakes which I will never buy again! Back to loving life!

Lots to get my head around

I have lots more reading and thinking to do before I go ahead with this. The other side of low carb is the difficulty I will have sourcing non standard things like oat bran or wholemeal flour.
So at the moment? Need more time to research then who knows?
learning to love life as it is
