The chicks go out

by Bobshouse on 09 Apr 2013, 08:33

Big day today. The chicks have had 24 hours without the heat lamp and have retained their body heat. I feel they now have enough feathers to live outside and I can have my spare bedroom back. I have an old rabbit hutch and run I use for chicks as it takes a while to integrate them with the flock. I also have to protect them from the Buzzards. Nothing is happening with the eggs in the incubator so one more week and I will dispose of them. The two ducks are still sitting on their eggs but no ducklings yet. Jemima duck has settled into a routine of flying off during the day and coming back to the chicken barn at night. She seems to not want to be with the ducks.
The Elder trees are starting to bud. I hope there are plenty of flowers this year as I have run out of elder flower cordial. The pear trees also have buds.
Weather meant to improve this week so hope to get going fully on veggie patch.
Am aiming for another fast day on Thursday and am working on pulling myself out of depression. Some sun will certainly help.
The plaster boarding of the Gite continues, this week should see it finished. I have finally worked out how I want my kitchen and once the Gite is done that is the next thing to do which will really make me happy.
We are waiting for another delivery of wood which will need stacking. As the cold weather has gone on so long we have used more wood than normal.
Will crank up the oven shortly as need to do some baking. I have an egg mountain to reduce! I give loads away but my ducks and chickens just keep laying!

In for repair Monday, Wednesday and Friday
learning to love life as it is

Hi Bobshouse, good news on the chickens. I have just finished reading all your blog. You have had a rough ride but I admire your clarity. You know what you have to do and you are on the road. Progress not perfection.

Like you I live on a rural property and keep chooks and make my own bread. We live in Tasmania, Australia. I make sour dough. I also try to stay away from factory food and we do pretty well with the garden and the chooks. We try to eat local products. So I found a lot to identify with in your blog. Be kind to yourself and keep doing it one day at a time. I thought it was really good how one day you were planning to fast, and then you didn't because you didn't feel up to it. This diet is flexible like that. The main game is to restore your relationship with food, as you so clearly articulate. Go well, girl! I'm with you.

Thank you so much Sally. I have a lot to get my head round. Used to be a trained nurse, then spent 8 years as a medical sales rep, national account manager. Took the job as it offered final salary pension and worked towards moving to France. This is something I have long wanted to do but the adjustment is enormous which has probably contributed to the depression. I used to work a 50 hour week, travelled lots and was always suited and booted! Had a modern house in a busy sunburb with lots going on.Now I live on what was a farm in an old house built in 1832, surrounded by French farmers. We are converting a barn into two Gites and still have our house to renovate. I am reclaiming the land from the wild. We can go days without seeing anyone which is quite hard. Where I used to hold big business meetings chasing large contracts I now thank chickens and ducks for their eggs and get excited when my veggies grow! I do love this life but cannot say it has been an easy transition. I put on weight when I retired but only have a stone to lose. I completely identify with 5:2 and will get to grips with it.
