You might consider reading the book "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes or "Escape the diet trap" by John Briffa for a different perspective.
Both books offer very clear and decisive arguments that counter societies' ingrained beliefs that overweight people need to eat less, do more; have greater will power or are lazy, weak and emotional eaters. These ideas and implied conclusions are definitely false on all counts.
I found both books to be personally enabling, providing answers that I can use today, not warm and comfortable excuses that won't correct underlying issues.

Time to test my theory

For some years now I have been trying to clean up my food and on the whole have managed it. Very little now is made in a factory and I feel good about this. The high fat, high sugar stuff the factories churn out is addictive and yummy, they have us hooked! This Autumn I will buy my first ethically reared lamb that is local. I will continue to grow this. On the whole supermarket meat here is local and most animals are reared outside. I have to wean myself off the factory stuff. Means more work for me, but I enjoy cooking.
So watch this space!
