Random food thoughts!

by Debs on 21 Oct 2013, 08:58

I went to the Salamanca Market in Hobart on Saturday, a lovely market with local produce and craft. It is always worth a wander and was even better this time as I met Judio there for a coffee.

On the way home I was thinking about meals for the week (a common theme in our house, due to the fact that the other half always likes to know where his next meal is coming from!). We were having home made pad thai on Sunday, a Malaysian aubergine dish on Tuesday, pasta on Wednesday and Indian curry on Friday!

It reminded me that the first book I ever read on Australia was 'A Town Like Alice' by Neville Shute when I was eleven or twelve and remember vividly the descriptions of the worst sort of English food. Forty degrees celsius but still, steak and eggs, lamb chops and eggs for breakfast, hot roasts whatever the weather! Boy things have changed. I always laugh when I listen to people go on about how they want to preserve the Australian way of life as it conjures up exactly that, the worst of English 1950s cooking!

I grew up in England on a diet of English stodge, which I soon forsook for more exciting cuisine. Exciting in our house was a Vesta curry, remember those?! So I didn't get my foodie inclinations from the family, but when I went to university and discovered the 5 pound curry, chips and curry sauce! And the rest, as they say, is sitting on my stomach and hips!

Anyway, the weight loss is going slowly, I broke my fast today with a bowl of hot porridge and blueberries, comfort food par excellence! We'll see tomorrow how that has affected the weight loss this week!!
