Fat burn rates

by PhilT on 11 Mar 2013, 20:28

Just testing the blog really, but interested in fat oxidation rates reported in scientific papers.

1. After 3 days total fasting the fat burn of young healthy weight men rose from 5.1 g/h to 5.7 g/h while their metabolic rate fell from 73.5 kcal/h to 67.8 kcal/h. Carbohydrate utilisation fell from 3.1 to 1.5 g/h reflecting a shift from carbohydrate to fat as fuel.

2. Obese women dieting using VLC diet showed a reduction in fat oxidation from 2.0 to 1.2 g/h while resting energy expenditure fell from 1246 to 1076 kcal/day. Carbohydrate oxidation increased from 5.0 to 6.3 g/h. Values are before / after a 13 kg weight loss / 10 kg fat loss.
