It's a Strategy

by SmokyMtns on 02 May 2013, 14:30

My strategy for my 2 feed days was to eat "normally"; I was successful. I have read enough blogs on this site and enough info on the internet and in the forums to know that one cannot eat "normally" on feed days, and normal for me is not normal for the average weight human being. If my eating were "normal", I wouldn't be here writing this blog! Ergo I am going to have to manage my feed days in a better way. Regardless of the diet, program, weight loss system you follow, the bottom line is this: Calories in must be less than calories out. If I fast 2 days and eat my normal meals, I'm going to maintain the weight I have and I'm here to tell you that just ain't gonna happen! Ergo (again) I'm going to have to eat less on my feed days . . . not DIET, but be cautious, aware, sensible, mindful and careful.

This is just my second fast day and so far so good. Drinking lots of water with fresh lemon juice.

Hi SmokyMts: It's me RockyJP from the flatlands of TX. Your entry today was so timely for me. Yesterday I ate as I "normally" do. As a result, I feel badly about myself and am most sure the scale would reflect my "normal" eating day. My fasting day today feels like a reprieve and a hope that I can just move on. So sick of my old habits.
Thanks for your post. Paula

Hi Smokey, I understand what you are saying, but I think you don't quite understand what is meant by eating normally.

On a feed day, one is supposed to eat their TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). On fast days, they are supposed to eat 25% of their TDEE. This means that in one week's time, there is a calorie deficit of 150% of one's TDEE. So yes, eating "normally" does result in fewer calories consumed than expended. You can actually google any TDEE calculator and figure out what your own TDEE is, based on factors such as your age, gender, weight and activity level.

Good luck!!

I totally understand TDEE, but what I'm saying is that I eat MORE than my TDEE "normally" which has gotten me in this in this not-so-good situation. My new normal has to be that TDEE! I'm taking baby steps, baby steps!

On another note, I did as suggested and calculated my TDEE and I was amazed at how high it is even though I lead a pretty sedentary life! I'm going to do better with my "normal" eating! Thanks for the suggestion.

I track my food on fast and feast days. I find that I am not eating as much as I think I am!

I also start all my work days the same, as if they were fast days. So M-T-W-Th, I have about 200 calories by dinner time. So from there I eat either a Spartan dinner of about 300 calories and plain tea afterwards, or I have a dinner without counting calories, I add walnuts to my yogurt snack, and I add cream to my tea and probably have a 100 Calorie Dark chocolate Trader Joes candy bar. Then on weekends, I eat like a "normal" person. only when hungry, only what I really want, and only till I am not hungry any more.

So basically I usually end up with 2 fast days under 500 calories, 2 moderate days between 1200 and 1800 calories, and 3 days where I generally hit my TDEE which is 2200 from the lowest of all the calculators.
