Maintenance Mundanities

I'm in maintenance but still whittling down my body fat levels in order to achieve a reasonable body composition. I have very low muscle mass so, although I have a low scale weight and look slender, I have an unwelcome kinship with streaky bacon, except that the bacon has a more favourable fat:lean ratio.

Fat Mass Detail from Repeat DXA Scan

by SSure on 12 Apr 2015, 15:51

This is the nearest I could contrive for a table so apologies in advance for the inadequate formatting.

Fat Mass Detail

Lean mass includes all parts of the body (organs, muscle, and fluids) but excludes body fat, so fat mass is everything that excludes organs, muscle, and fluids.

Total Weight: 47.4kg/104lbs (me, in the afternoon, with clothes)
Fat Weight: 9.148kg/20.1lbs
Tissue %Fat: 20.1%

There is a graph that shows where the body fat falls on a Composition Reference Centile Graph that shows my Total Body Tissue %Fat result in comparison to a reference population (in my case, the UK Total Body Composition Reference Population, version 112). There are currently and unhelpfully no standard definitions of normal or obesity based on Tissue%Fat results, but the centile graph allows someone to compare themselves against a reference population. I'm in the 2nd Centile for the group that I most resemble in that reference population data (i.e.,...

Lean Body Mass Detail

by SSure on 06 Apr 2015, 08:26

This is the nearest I could contrive for a table so apologies in advance for the inadequate formatting.

Lean Body Mass Detail

Lean mass includes all parts of the body (organs, muscle, and fluids) but excludes body fat.

The higher the Tissue %Lean, the more muscular the body. [NB, I don't agree with this, it's just a number, it shouldn't be used as a proxy for muscle quality, it only indicates quantity.]

Total Weight: 47.4kg/104lbs (me, in the afternoon, with clothes)
Lean Weight: 36.3kg/80lbs
Tissue %Lean: 76.7%

Lean Mass Balance

Lean mass balance is a comparison of your body's right to left lean mass symmetry. A lean mass difference close to zero indicates a balance of muscle. [NB, again, I don't wholly agree with this, you're about to see a lean mass difference in my trunk that reflects the deviation of my spine that is related to the scoliosis.]

Repeat DXA Scan

by SSure on 03 Apr 2015, 08:31

I had a repeat DXA scan recently and the headline news is that it vindicates the WOE and schedule that I follow.

June 2013 I was 127lbs and 42% body fat
March 2014 119lbs 30.1% body fat
March 2015 102lbs 20.1% body fat

My stringent gym/workout/activities mean that I've managed to conserve my muscle mass remarkably well given the 17lbs weight difference in a year. Usual estimates are that during WLM, somewhere from 15-60% of drops in mass will be lean body mass (LBM) rather than body fat (BF).

I lost 300g of skeletal muscle which is:
i) within the repeat error range for a DXA
ii) much lower than would usually be expected
iii) the version I prefer is that this shows that my vanguard actions to retain my muscle mass are allowing me to hold station.

The downside of iii) is that it might indicate just how very hard I need to work to maintain my muscle mass and it would tend to confirm my suspicion that surgery...

Maintenance neuroses

by SSure on 22 Feb 2015, 18:30

I'm struggling. Altho' I'm still within my maintenance range, my weight has gone up to 109lbs.

Now, I think that's because my joint problems are influencing my NEAT as it's becoming a noticeable production to do even simple things like take or replace an item on a shelf and I don't pick up post or things on the floor that I'd previously have done without even registering. I don't carry laundry baskets or rubbish bins arounds (much to my inconvenience and irritation). If I go to a supermarket, I have to use a trolley rather than a basket and ask other shoppers or assistants to reach for various items for me. I'm even in the embarrassing position of having to ask people to open some doors for me (I can open a door that I can lean on but can't pull a door open). I'm sure that all of this adds up.

It's also possible that I have some systemic swelling that isn't outlandishly noticeable in any one place but is more generalised.

I've had to scale back on my beloved paddling/kayaking - it's...

No. 105lbs is not "fantastic"

by SSure on 15 Jan 2015, 13:52

Someone on another forum congratulated me on my "fantastic" weight today (weigh-in of 105lbs). And asked if I'm in weight-loss mode or maintenance.

I almost cried in frustration and it was difficult to put back a response that did not sound depressing. And I had to do this despite my belief that people need to know what to expect in maintenance (e.g., puppies, rainbows, and a smooth path for some; an initial smooth path of several months/years for others, following by stoicism and relentless vigilance).

105lbs is absurd but what I can manage. I would far rather weigh another 25lbs or more if the majority of that were lean body mass because it would make it so much easier to manage my health as I age. More skeletal muscle would give me some much needed metabolic flexibility and hugely reduce my risk of metabolic syndrome related disorders (CVD, diabetes II etc.).

I think if I dug out some of my clothes from before the accident - before this loss of muscle mass - they'd fit...
