Maintenance Mundanities

I'm in maintenance but still whittling down my body fat levels in order to achieve a reasonable body composition. I have very low muscle mass so, although I have a low scale weight and look slender, I have an unwelcome kinship with streaky bacon, except that the bacon has a more favourable fat:lean ratio.

On being a TOFI (Thin Outside, Fat Inside)

by SSure on 10 Aug 2014, 10:27

What's interesting, to me, was the Bod Pod technician's assumption that I must be carrying a lot of visceral fat - the much demonised 'toxic fat that strangles our internal organs' to adopt some of the current newspaper terminology around it.

But, the more refined analysis of the Dexa scan indicates that I have below average levels of visceral fat: I just have low muscle mass. So, the new Public Health TOFI bugbear should perhaps be further refined to recognise that some TOFIs have low muscle mass rather than high levels of the sort of visceral fat that's associated with metabolic disorders (e.g., diabetes II; CVD).

HW: 168lbs (2011) CW: 102lbs BMI: <19
Maintenance IF 4:3

Dexa scan reports that I have low skeletal muscle mass and I'm categorised as sarcopenic, despite my age and fitness activities: body composition changed from 42% body fat at 127lbs to 20% at 103lbs.
