And on the weight stuff... you're my inspiration. I've been stuck on a plateau recently and this forum is helping me to stick with it despite the lack of results at the scale. Thanks for sharing. And congrats on reaching your big BMI milestone.

a healthy weight and a healthy election
by Sallyo on 12 Mar 2014, 22:25
Today I am fasting and looking forward to it.
I still feel fat. This is interesting. I am happy to continue 5:2 until I don't feel fat and after all, BMI 24.9 is at the top end of a healthy weight. If I keep doing 5:2 that should drop. I didn't think I would get to a BMI of 25 until at least the middle of 2014 and I imagined that the last few grams would be really hard to lose. But they haven't been. I haven't done anything differently and suddenly, I am there.
It is so exciting.
There is only 2 more days until the election. In Tasmania we have a voting system called the Hare-Clark system. It is very representational. If 20% of voters vote for your party then you will get 20% of the seats. This is why it is so good for the Greens. We have been using a different election strategy this time and it will be so interesting to see if it has paid off. In the recent Federal election we had a drop in the vote, but we expect in this state election, that this will pick up. The most interesting point will be to see if the polling booths where we have concentrated our efforts will see a bigger swing to us than the other booths. We have been doing a lot of door knocking. It was my job to try to recruit supporters to do this and it was incredibly difficult. Everyone only wants to do letter boxing, but this has been shown to be ineffectual. Door knocking requires people actually talk to other people about why they support the Greens and more importantly, listen to people tell them about the things they are concerned about. I was pretty nervous about doing it at first but now I am completely ready and able to do it. I actually find it very satisfying to offer to talk politics to people. It is such a taboo in Australian society and lots of people refuse to talk about it, but when they don't refuse, it's so satisfying.
In Tasmania we have had the Labor party in power for a very long time. In the last term they had to co-operate with the Greens to form a government. This is not uncommon. Often the major parties get the same number of seats and one of the parties has to do a deal with the Greens to form government. The Liberals refuse to do so. They won't even attend any debates where the Greens are present. So much for what they think about the significant minority of people who support the Greens. Both parties are swearing that they won't do any deals with the Greens.
In Australia the Labor Party has fallen over itself to appear as right wing as the Liberals and this has driven the Liberals further and further to the right. Surely some Labor voters are wondering what has happened to their party. But are they ready to vote Green?
Labor will see a big swing away from them because of the 'It's time' factor. Will the Liberals manage to get a majority? Will Labor lose so badly that the Greens become the Opposition? What about the Palmer United Party - a big mining party and new to the game? It is all very suspenseful and interesting.
I'll keep you posted.
