christmas presents

by Sallyo on 17 Nov 2014, 05:32

Hello Blog. It doesn't seem so easy to do blogs on the new forum site. I don't know why, but I've certainly stopped. I haven't blogged since September. It is now mid November and Monday fast day for me. Still haven't lost any weight since last summer. Still it's nearly summer again so I live in hope. I have recently altered my fasting routine. I started off with 3 small meals a day. Then I went to miso soup in the early afternoon and dinner. Then I went nothing until dinner. Now I'm doing 'early dinner'. I found myself reaching out for biscuits and butter or nuts while I was cooking dinner and I think that compromised my 500 calories. In a short while I'm going to make a frittata with smoked salmon and capers and dill. Dill from the garden. Eggs from the chooks. That's all good. I'll prepare some potatoes for the OH but I won't have any. Lettuce salad perhaps, with dressing.

I have been making my christmas presents today. We pulled apart the object to see how it was made and the inside was cardboard. It's from a mounted photograph. The hooks were sewed into the cardboard with strong thread. So I found some cardboard, the backs of a graph book and a sketch pad, A4, and they have worked really well. Now I only have to do the hand sewing and work out a way to cover the hooks in fabric. Tony made the hooks out of fencing wire. I found some very old 'Waxed linen thread' and have used that to sew on the hooks. The whole project is very satisfying. I am wondering which relative made this thing originally. Pity the photograph wasn't there and we might have been able to work it out. My dad's sister, Datie, was very into hand crafts so it may have been her. In fact, the fabric looks a bit like something she would choose. And the one mum had is the only one in the family that I know of, so if it was someone on her side of the family, you'd think everyone would have one. Datie also did fancy knitting and tatting and may have use this thing to hold the pattern book so that she had her hands free. That makes sense. I should write, 'made by Sally' on the cardboard somewhere so that in generations from now if anyone pulls it apart to try to recreate it and is wondering the same thing, they will know. It feels very connecting to be making these. I am going to make one for everyone because we all like to read at the table these days, especially wearing transition glasses. So it helps to hold the book up right.

I can't talk about it, or post pictures on Facebook or anything because it's going to be presents for everyone. Onwards.

Katharina is my fasting buddy.
