Week of 11 March

by Tracieknits on 11 Mar 2013, 18:37

Well I have been doing 5:2 since January 8 and I have to say I think it's brilliant. Today is my 19th fast day.

I'm not losing weight at the speed I would quite hope for, but I have other issues to factor in. The biggest one is my hyperactive thyroid/Graves Disease, for which I have to take medication to slow my thyroid down. I'm pretty sure that's putting a bit of a damper on the weight loss as at my weight I really ought to be losing a bit more quickly.

On the bright side, not only have I stopped gaining weight (this medication really makes you gain weight), but I've lost 9 pounds so far. I am technically no longer morbidly obese per my BMI, which is wonderful. Although I'm still obese, so there's loads more work to go.

Interestingly, I feel like this diet has put me in touch with my body. Now, when I eat an inappropriate amount of food, I actually feel a bit sick. That's fantastic! I had actually been a bit jealous of people who would get these sorts of cues from their body, because mine never ever said "well that's quite enough chocolate there for three people, please stop now!"

This Saturday, my husband and I went out for a nice meal because our son was with friends. Instead of ordering the usual: a bottle of wine, two appetizers, two mains and two desserts, we simply ordered two glasses of wine, and four appetizers (or "small plates"). It was more than enough food. We also intentionally parked over 1/2 mile away from the restaurant so we would have to get a bit of exercise. So rather than leave the restaurant having eaten far too much, we left the restaurant feeling quite good. So good we stopped at the patisserie on the way home - but still it was substantially fewer calories than we would have normally eaten

It's now 2:30pm, and I'm not even hungry - despite the fact I have had nothing but black coffee and water today. I am a bit cold, as is usual on fast days, so I made myself a cup of herbal tea (Celestial Seasonings Blueberry - yum!). Dinner for tonight will be chicken cutlets pounded thin and dredged in seasoning. I have been using "Northwoods Seasoning" by Penzey's http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/ ... woods.html I heat the pan until it's hot enough to make a drop of water dance. then I spritz the pan with cooking spray and put the seasoned chicken in, making sure not to crowd the pan. Then when I am ready to flip the cutlets, I spritz them with a bit more cooking spray right before I turn them. They're fantastic, and once you pound them thin, they only need about 3 or 4 minutes per side. To go with them, I will roast some veggies. I have some frozen asparagus, so I will take a rimmed cooking sheet and brush about 1 tsp of oil on the sheet. I will arrange the asparagus on the sheet and roll them a bit so they're very lightly coated with oil. A bit of seasoned salt and pepper (perhaps lemon pepper and plain salt) and into a 400 degree oven they go for about 20 minutes or until they're starting to caramelize a bit. It's a good idea to turn them about halfway through. I will probably roast one more veggie, depending on my mood it might be carrots or brussels sprouts. I use the same process, but those veggies take longer - about 40 minutes for the sprouts and about an hour for the baby carrots, depending on their size. Or I might make a spinach salad and toss it with a bit of lemon white balsamic vinegar and a tiny amount of herbed olive oil.

Well my son will be home soon and the day will careen into evening at breakneck speed! The joys of having a 12 year old

Battling a naughty thyroid.

Lost 73 lbs and almost 12 points of BMI - so far

Yum! My husband and I are still getting used to fasting (this is our third fast) so I've limited myself to making quick dishes (salad, grilled beef) as neither one of us has the willpower to wait a long time! I'm guessing/hoping that will change as we adjust to the diet. I'm a knitter too and I've found it a great distraction.

LOL Thanks Carorees!

Jenm - I know what you mean! week before last I actually made a veggie curry the night before so all we'd have to do is heat it up at dinner time. We ate less than half the curry, so I immediately put it in the freezer and we had it again on Friday. That worked brilliantly and I plan to do that more often now. :-)
