I feel for you I myself am heading for some extensive and expensive dental treatment.I have cared for my teeth the best I could on my own I'm absolutely petrified of dentists A good friend of mine has been an absolute diamond and finally with her by my side I finally got the courage and survived my first visit in 5yrs........Gum infection,3 gaps 1 broken tooth Need route canal treatment/filling post and porcelain crown at nearly £1000 just for the broken tooth near the front. To give me back a perfect smile/fill the gaps would cost more than we pay for a decent second hand car But on the upside my dentist was very understanding, patient explained all my options in an easy to understand way and did say that my remaing teeth are in good condition but I do need to keep up with annual checks and visits to the hygenist Treatment starts tomorrow....deep breath it won't hurt me......only the bank balance/kids inheritance
Ouch! @susbut65 I did not use to be fond of dentists myself but I think they are a lot more understanding now than when I was young. They have kind of got us over a barrel - eventually the alternative is excruciating toothache. I am sure that there is nothing to be afraid of, the anaesthetic are really good now, so your treatment will not be as bad as you expect. My husband's dentist has been on courses for dealing with nervous patients, and you might be offered a sedative to help you through. I actually disliked the hygienist treatment more than fillings because they work without anaesthetic but today was the first time I felt absolutely no discomfort whatsoever so I think despite everything my teeth are a little stronger. It's worth it all to keep your very own food processors in working order.
You are certainly right about dentists today in comparison to when we were young/much younger. My experience today was that whilst it did not hurt(due to the anaesthetic )it was the noise and sensation of the equipment motion that I found unnerving. That and the fact the temporary numbness made it difficult to respond to regular enquiries of how I was feeling-How would they feel with numbness affecting one side of their face....Lips dry and tongue feeling five times the size it should be(it was'nt,just felt my mouth had shrunk around my tongue!!!)with a sensor clamped to the right side of my mouth and his fingers and tools taking up the remaining airspace causing excess salivation how would anyone feel or be able to respond Private dental treatment.....Shame I'm too old in the tooth(pardon the pun)to retrain and change jobs

A bit despondent when comparing this to my general improvement in inflammation - I am a lot more flexible than I was so it remains to see if things look a bit better in October.
