ema_o's battle of the belly

by ema_o on 22 Apr 2013, 09:23

I’m just starting week 5, fast number 8 (I missed one over Easter) and although I have lost some weight & my clothes are starting to fit better it’s still a struggle to believe this is actually going to work for me.
Weight wise I don’t think I have loads to lose. I started at 11lb 8, and now at around 11lb 3 (bit heavier this morning after pizza for tea and not a very healthy weekend) so it does seem to be coming off, but this is kind of the weight I have fluctuated at over the past couple of years so it doesn’t feel as if it’s actually going to stay gone.
However my waist is bigger than it has every been (started at 38 inches) and not sure what my body fat is now but a while ago it was over 30% (33% rings a bell) so I’m at risk for lots of horrible diseases and I don’t look good in any of my clothes. While I wasn’t expecting the weight to fall off rapidly I was hoping that I’d start to see a bit more of a difference by now, so I thought I’d start a diary to record what I’m doing, what I’m thinking of trying and what seems to be changing!

I started this thinking my main motivation was weight loss, and I still feel like it is even though there are all the other factors as well. I suppose as I haven’t had any health scares I’m not overly worried about my health but it’s a bit silly to think like that especially in light of my waist : height ratio and my family history of diabetes.
I read in my first week the advice to think about my motivation for doing this & get the reasons written down – I didn’t do it at the time so this diary seems like a good place to start!

I want to lose weight to:
Look good
Not be an embarrassment to my small child when he gets to an age to notice that I’m fat
Feel good about myself
Look good at a wedding I’m going to in 7 weeks (vain I know but there are people I haven’t seen in years that will be there – I don’t want to impress them with how great I look but I don’t want them to think how bad I look!
Avoid the struggle with weight after my next child (if there is one).

I want to avoid developing health problems to:
Be around in good health for as long as possible to see my little boy grow up & enjoy being with him
Be able to enjoy life with friends, family and my usually great other half
Not have to rely on being cured but instead not have to get to the point where I’m ill.
Continue to enjoy an active life as long as possible – want to be able to ski / roller skate / do yoga / walk for miles

I also want my parents to see how well this way of eating is going for me and to think it’s worth following it themselves. Mum has struggled to lose weight for a long time, and now has diabetes, and Dad is fine but I worry a lot about him.

My focus this week is obviously to stick to my fast days, but also to eat better on my feed days, I want to cut out snacking between meals, and eat healthy food most of the time. I’ve had a lot of alcohol over the last couple of weeks, partly as we’ve had wine leftover from little un’s party so I’m going to try and avoid booze most of the week and only 2 or 3 drinks on the Saturday when I’m hoping to go out.
I seem to be able to avoid snacking better if I have something nice to look forwards to for my next meal, and also if it’s ready fairly soon after I get home from work. So I’ve planned our evening meals for the week and will do the same for lunches on feed days, plus have sorted shopping list ready for OH to pick up today.

Fingers crossed I will feel it’s working a bit better for me after being a bit more prepared this week
