How appropriate that I am starting today 6th January 2014, Epiphany in the liturgical calendar. For the 5:2 fast diet is truly an epiphany. Early hunter-gatherer humans no doubt alternated between fasting and feasting, depending on the luck of the hunt, and unfortunately there are still too many people on this planet who don't know when their next meal will be. All of us here on this site are no doubt blessed with a full fridge/freezer and a well-stocked pantry, and a supermarket nearby. So how can we control our weight in the midst of this plenty? And more importantly, how can we prevent the diseases that often ensue from a lifetime of overindulgence or wrong eating habits? Research shows that severe calorie restriction can considerably increase the life span of laboratory rats, but as the joke says, even if they don't live longer it sure must feel longer. Losing 1.6 pounds is hardly a plateau! You are not going to keep losing at the same rate as the beginning. You should be very happy with 1 pound a week!
