My Intermittent Fasting Journey

My progress on Intermittent Fasting will be posted here with updates on my weight being posted daily, and with updates on my waist size and body fat content being posted on a weekly basis on a Monday. My weigh-in day was a Monday but I will now be weighing in every day in order to keep everything on track, and I now fast on a Monday on most weeks (although that will often change depending upon my circumstances at that time). More information about my weight loss background and my goals for the future on intermittent fasting can be found on my first forum posting which can be seen by clicking here.

Day 90 Feeding Day 64

by johncs2013 on 17 Nov 2013, 08:30

Current Actual Weight: 75.2kg (11 stone 12 pounds)
Current Trend Weight: 73.2kg (11 stone 7 pounds)

After the over-indulgences of Friday, I wasn't feeling all that hungry yesterday and went to my usual spin class on an empty stomach with the hope that this would help to get my body back into fat burning mode. However, this bout of exercise just served to bring that hunger back as the body seeks to recover that lost fat which is being burned.

As usual, I tried to do a 16:8 day, but I had a couple of haggis pastries at lunchtime, with a pear and a glass of milk. However, I then proceeded to eat some fruit cake and a couple of boxes of chocolate truffles later on. For my evening meal, I then had what I would normally have as a Full Scottish Breakfast, except that I had that for my evening meal.

That consisted of half of a mixed grill pack and for that, I had a piece of black pudding, a piece of lorne sausage and a piece of fruit dumpling. With that, I had two slices of bacon, two poached eggs and some beans. For a dessert, I then had some strawberries with custard and finished off with a cup of coffee with milk.

Since there was no alcohol consumed on this occasion, that lot wasn't quite as bad as the over-indulges of Friday. Yet, my weight has still shot all the way up to 75.2kg this morning, which is a further increase of 1.4kg from yesterday. I know that all of that can't be down to an increase of body fat, as even my biggest over-indulgences can never be anywhere near enough to gain that much in body fat in such a short space of time.

A lot of that will probably be due to water retention, but I don't believe that this can be the only factor as I'm not really feeling all that bloated. What I am really concerned about is the fact that I have still not really been going to the toilet despite the large amounts of food that I've been eating over the last couple of days. That means that all of this food is just piling up in my system just now, because my body isn't getting rid of it in any way, and that could be where a lot of this rapid weight gain is coming from.

That to me, is one of the side effects of 5:2 which is a bit concerning for me, in addition to the fact that I have never been happy with cutting carbs and I think that these over-indulgences are showing that. On this forum, there are countless threads about the negative comments about the 5:2 diet which are made in the media and in response to that, many people on this forum will admit that the 5:2 diet isn't for everyone.

Perhaps, I am just one such person who this WOL was never destined to work for. However, the beauty of this WOL is the fact that even at this late stage of the week, I can still do something to ensure that tomorrow's official weekly weigh-in is more respectable and for that, I only need to take advantage of the fact that my weight always goes down on my fasting days.

The way to deal with these over-indulges is therefore to throw in an extra fasting day today which might still not be enough to prevent an overall weight gain over the course of the week, but which might still be enough to ensure that weight is still below 74kg at tomorrow's official weekly weigh-in. Of course, that would make this yet another 4:3 week as my week always runs from Monday to Sunday.

That would also have implications for the week ahead, as I normally fast on a Monday and don't really want to be doing back to back fasting days. In that scenario, I would therefore need to fast on Tuesday instead. I have another appointment coming up on Friday about voluntary wok and don't want to be fasting then, so I would probably end up fasting on Thursday and that would therefore tie me into another period of ADF starting from today as I would be fasting today, and on Tuesday and Thursday.

Yet, the sorry tell of the results of these weigh-ins are showing that action needs to be taken to deal with that immediately, and it looks as though that is what I will need to do. Furthermore, I wasn't really able to handle my stress levels very well the last time that I did a period of ADF (which was only just over a week ago) and that to me, raises a concern that I'm never really ever going to be able to handle the 5:2 diet very well.

That raises another dilemma because I had planned for today to be a feeding day, and had therefore planned to have the other half of that mixed grill pack. However, I won't be able to have that if I fast today because there is nothing there to say how many calories are in that pack, and that is something which I never take any chances on when it comes to a fasting day.

In addition to that, the use-by date shown on that pack is today which means that if I do finish off that pack, I will have to do so today. Now, I know that there are a lot of things that can still be used safely well after the sell-by date. However, it is a different matter when that date is shown as a 'use by' date rather than something else like a 'best before' date. Use By dates are always given for health reasons because of the risks to our health if the item in question is consumed after that date, and that is why that mixed grilled pack has to be used today, if it is going to be used up at all.

However, the fact that I am going to have to throw in that extra fasting day today in order to deal with my rapidly increasing weight means that I will probably just have to accept that I am not going to be able to finish off that mixed grill pack, and will therefore end up having to throw it out. That for me, will be very sad as I was so looking forward to that.
