My Intermittent Fasting Journey
My progress on Intermittent Fasting will be posted here with updates on my weight being posted daily, and with updates on my waist size and body fat content being posted on a weekly basis on a Monday. My weigh-in day was a Monday but I will now be weighing in every day in order to keep everything on track, and I now fast on a Monday on most weeks (although that will often change depending upon my circumstances at that time). More information about my weight loss background and my goals for the future on intermittent fasting can be found on my first forum posting which can be seen by clicking here.
Weekly Roundup For 21 October 2013

However, I was still taking my blood pressure tablets (which would normally be 20mg of lisinopril, taken first thing in the morning) at that time, and it was suggested that I begin a trial of monitoring my blood pressure twice a day (morning and night) whilst not taking my BP tablets. The best values for that on each day have come out as follows:-
Monday 14 October 2013: 147/81 (Pulse: 48)
Tuesday 15 October 2013: 131/74 (Pulse: 58)
Wednesday 16 October 2013: 137/81 (Pulse: 53)
Thursday 17 October 2013: 147/82 (Pulse: 51)
Friday 18 October 2013: 131/74 (Pulse: 55)
Saturday 19 October 2013: 135/73 (Pulse: 59)
Sunday 20 October 2013: 142/79 (Pulse: 56)
Monday 21 October 2013: 144/82 (Pulse: 57)
Last Monday's readings were taken on my last day with my BP meds, whereas the other readings were taken without them. I have entered all of my BP results into an Android app which shows a graph that also has a trend line attached to it. Whilst I'm still getting some high readings, this trend line is showing a very slow decrease in time, of both my systolic and diastolic BPs, although these are not now likely to come down to acceptable levels by the time of my doctor's appointment on Wednesday morning, which is a bit concerning
The figures for my weight throughout last week are as follows:-
Monday 14 October 2013: 74.5kg (11 stone 10 pounds)
Tuesday 15 October 2013: 72.5kg (11 stone 6 pounds)
Wednesday 16 October 2013: 73.8kg (11 stone 9 pounds)
Thursday 17 October 2013: 74.0kg (11 stone 9 pounds)
Friday 18 October 2013: 72.8kg (11 stone 6 pounds)
Saturday 19 October 2013: 74.2kg (11 stone 10 pounds)
Sunday 20 October 2013: 74.7kg (11 stone 11 pounds)
Monday 21 October 2013: 74.8kg.(11 stone 11 pounds)
These figures show that my weight has gone up by a pound since this time last week, for the second week in a row. During the last week, I did a complete 36 hour zero calorie fast between 7pm on the Sunday night, and 7am on Tuesday night). That resulted in my lowest weight of 72.5kg (11 stone 6 pounds) but since I would have lost a lot of water weight due to the fact that I didn't eat anything during the previous day, that is not really an accurate indication of my actual true weight which is why it is only once a week that I give an official figure for my weight on my progress tracker.
I also did a normal 600 calorie fast (albeit with a complete 24 hour zero calorie fast between 7pm on Wednesday night and 7pm on Thursday night amongst that). That resulted in a weight of 72.8kg on the following morning, which is also 11 stone 6 pounds. That in turn would suggest going on full zero calorie fasts won't give much better results than a normal 600 calorie fast although there is not really enough data here, to be able to make any real conclusion on that.
Weight fluctuates a lot from day to day and so, a pound weight gain over a week won't seem like much. However, it is the fact that this has now happened on two successive weeks that concerns me quite a bit. In the meantime, I can also report that my waist size has also gone up by 0.1 inches since this time last week from 31.6 inches to 31.7 inches. However, I can't say that I don't deserve these results because I did find that I couldn't stop eating during the last part of the week which makes those weight gains inevitable. I did try to reign in on my calorie intake a bit yesterday, but even that wasn't enough to prevent a further weight gain between yesterday and today.
So, now comes the question of where I go from here. It has been suggested that I reduce my carb intake, but that would take quite a major change to my diet which just seems too daunting for me to take on in one go, at least. That in turn isn't filling me with any confidence in what lies ahead for me with this WOL and the current results aren't acting in my favour just now, either. Nevertheless, I am working on gradually reducing my carbs and have actually managed to cut out all carbs on my fasting days.
In addition to that, today is another fasting day and that will once again, be a full 36 hour zero calorie fast. I will then be doing a normal fast on Thursday which will incorporate a full 24 hour zero calorie fast between 7pm on Wednesday night and 7pm on Thursday night. That is the same as last week, but the weight gains have to somehow be arrested and so, the real changes for the week ahead will be with my non-fasting days. For that reason, I am considering doing 16/8 for two of my non fasting days, and allowing myself the weekend off.
With 16/8, I would only be eating between 12 noon and 8pm which means that I would be skipping breakfast which is where a lot of my calorie intake was being consumed during last week. However, the 36 hour fast which I'm doing just now began at 7pm last night, and won't finish until 7am tomorrow morning. That means that doing 16/8 in the manner in which I have just mentioned, would take me into that extended fasting territory which is discouraged on this forum. That means that tomorrow morning will be the one day of the week where I can't skip breakfast.
I could still do 16/8 tomorrow by eating between 7am and 3pm, but that woould be much more difficult to put in practice because once I have eaten something, it will be harder to avoid eating anything else later on in the day. Because of that, it is not going to be practical to do 16/8 on a Tuesday whilst I do the 36 hour fasts in the manner in which I'm doing just now. That means that I would probably be looking at doing 16/8 on Wednesdays and Fridays, although I could also have a lighter breakfast than normal on a Tuesday and make that a low calorie day where my calorie intake is not low enough to make that a third fasting day and also above my BMR, but well below my TDEE.
