My Intermittent Fasting Journey

My progress on Intermittent Fasting will be posted here with updates on my weight being posted daily, and with updates on my waist size and body fat content being posted on a weekly basis on a Monday. My weigh-in day was a Monday but I will now be weighing in every day in order to keep everything on track, and I now fast on a Monday on most weeks (although that will often change depending upon my circumstances at that time). More information about my weight loss background and my goals for the future on intermittent fasting can be found on my first forum posting which can be seen by clicking here.

Weekly Roundup For 28 October 2013

by johncs2013 on 28 Oct 2013, 08:59

Last week was the week where I had went back onto blood pressure tablets after yet another failed attempt to come off them. It was also the week where I saw my doctor on that very subject. However, I have continued to monitor my blood pressure twice a day to see how going back onto the tablets would affect the results.

It was on Wednesday morning that I saw my doctor who suggested that my initial blood pressure readings before coming off those tablets, weren't really high enough to cause any real alarm. I also had a number of blood tests taken but the results for that appear to be quite good (if they weren't I would have heard about that, and I still wouldn't rule out doing so just yet).

Anyway, the best blood pressure results of the week are as follows:-

Monday 21 October 2013: 144/82 (Pulse: 50)
Tuesday 22 October 2013: 131/71 (Pulse: 56)
Wednesday 23 October 2013: 126/73 (Pulse: 51)
Thursday 24 October 2013: 138/80 (Pulse: 50)
Friday 25 October 2013: 128/70 (Pulse: 55)
Saturday 26 October 2013: 124/63 (Pulse: 54)
Sunday 27 October 2013: 119/65 (Pulse: 47)
Monday 28 October 2013: 139/75 (Pulse: 55)

Those are results that I am fairly pleased with, and it was good to even get my first ever complete healthy reading yesterday, where both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures are within the healthy range for that. The only concern though, is the fact that a lot of readings are still coming out to be quite high, and that was particularly noticeable both last night and this morning. That is therefore, something which I will continue to keep an eye on.

As for my weight, I had a lot to ponder after two successive one pound weekly weight gains and so, my weight was 74.8kg (about 11 stone and 11 pounds) when I weighed myself last Monday. I then did a complete 36 hour zero calorie fast and got that down to 72.8kg (which is 11 stone 6 pounds), a loss of 2kg from the previous day. However, that still meant that I was running at a one pound overall weight gain over the whole week.

I then broke that fast by consuming not quite as many calories as I did a week earlier, although I still consumed a fair number of calories then. Even with that slightly reduced number of calories though, my weight still went back up to 73.9kg. That meant that I was still running at an overall weight gain of 0.1kg over the whole week (although I had reduced that a bit).

Some drastic actions were needed and so, I then began my first ever 16:8 day on Wednesday, where I would only eat for 8 hours on that day which for me, would be between 12 noon and 8pm. That meant that I didn't have any breakfast. However, that still didn't prevent my weight from going up to 74.1kg (11 stone 9 pounds) on Thursday morning and at this stage and with my birthday coming up at the weekend, the omens were not looking good in terms of trying to prevent yet another overall weight gain.

At this stage, I was still running at a 0.1kg overall weight gain over the week as I went into what would then just be a normal 600 calorie fasting day, that would allow me to go into another 16:8 day on Friday. Strangely, that brought my weight down to 72.7kg (11 stone 6 pounds) on Friday morning, which is actually slightly less than what it was after my big 36 hour zero calorie fast.

That was enough to turn my 0.1kg overall weight gain over the week, into a 0.1kg overall weight loss. However, the fact that I still had my birthday to come meant that I still didn't have any real confidence in the results at the end of the week, at this stage. However, I then did a 16:8 day on Friday and I finally got a good birthday surprise when I went on the scales on Saturday morning to discover that my weight had only gone up by 0.5kg to 73.2kg, making that the smallest weight gain so far for the first feeding day after a fasting day.

That weight of 73.2kg (which is exactly 11 and a half stone) also set a new record for my lowest ever weight after a feeding day, so that was something to be really pleased with. In the end, I enjoyed a good day on my birthday with a good lunch with my friend, and a few drinks at night. I had also planned to eat a Chinese Takeaway at night, but my stomach wasn't really up to it.

On Saturday morning, that small weight gain from the previous day meant that overall weight loss for the week had now jumped up to a whole 1kg which is about 2.2 pounds. That overall weight loss was to grow even bigger when I weighed myself on Sunday morning and discovered that I hadn't gained any weight from the previous day, despite the various over-indulgences on that day.

That meant that my weight was still 73.2 kg (11 stone 7 pounds), making that only the first time that I hadn't gained any weight after a feeding day. That meant that the overall weight loss over the week was now running at 1.5kg (3.3 pounds). I then tried to be as sensible as possible with yesterday's eating habits, but I always had that nervous feeling that something might catch up with me in terms of my weight, and that it would still jump upwards at some point.

Those fears were even confirmed this morning as I jumped on the scales and noticed that my weight had gone up to 74.1kg (11 stone 9 pounds). That is an increase of 0.9kg from yesterday but luckily, that wasn't enough to prevent me from recording an overall weight loss of 0.6kg (which is nearly 2 pounds) over the whole week.

That is a result which I am certainly pleased with because it now means that I have finally broken that run of weekly weight gains and addition to that, I have also lost 0.6 inches from my waist since this time last week bringing my waist size down to a new record low value of 31.1 inches. My body fat content is also down to a record low value of 12.91%.

As for this week, I have changed things a bit yet again because I am now doing a normal 600 calorie fast instead of the 36 hour zero calorie fast that I did a week ago. That will then allow me to do a 16:8 day tomorrow, which should prevent me from wanting to eat one of those big breakfasts that were starting to creep in every Tuesday morning after those big zero calorie fasts.

I will then have a meeting on Thursday to discuss voluntary work and since I will be meeting a group of people in a cafe where there might be one or two cakes involved, I have decided not to do a fasting day then, although I will be doing 16:8 since that meeting doesn't take place until the afternoon.

My second fasting day will therefore be on Friday this week. After that, I will then be having the weekend off once again. That won't be as big a weekend as the one which I have just had, but the fact that I will still be able to relax during that period means that Friday will be a better day for doing that 36 hour zero calorie fast. That way, I will then be able to appreciate a good breakfast on Saturday morning, that bit more. Furthermore, I will be going straight into an RPM class on Saturday morning and so, I won't have the same amount of time to overeat as I would on a Tuesday morning.
