It doesn't sound critical at all Karen, it's actually rather interesting! As you say, it's no wonder people suffer from weight problems over there, and it's scary that England is heading the same thing!
Thanks Danielle. My home is in Northumberland BTW (just outside Corbridge)! It's a world away from San Francisco....
I think the war must have had an influence on attitudes to food and waste, that has lasted much longer than the generation who experienced it first hand. And food has become just another 'consumer' item, and devalued. I hope we don't go the same way as across the pond, but I suspect we might, as we get further away from that post-war generation.

About the Food Here
by rawkaren on 26 Feb 2014, 06:04
However not being as fastidious made me really notice how commoditized food is here. It is not truly, truly appreciated, its typically taken for granted. The wastage is horrific. On the one hand, I'm appalled, and then on the other, it is so awful no wonder so much gets disposed of.
There is a culture of food ready to go, people taking boxes of food away from restaurants they can't eat (because the portions are obscene), and an assumption that food is in plentiful supply. I don't want to offend anyone here, but it is clear this is a society that has never truly experienced lack. So for the Europeans, I wonder how much the second world war and even back as far as the Irish potato famine, helped to shape our attitudes towards food.
Even with all of this food around, it is pretty tasteless and you suspect the quality is not great. For example, cheese does not taste like the cheese I know in Europe. To get good quality ingredients, I have found I need to spend ALOT of money to get genuinely organic, fresh quality ingredients. Sugar seems to be in everything. It is no wonder that people suffer with weight problems here. I feel myself falling into a similar trap of convenience especially working 14 hour days.
This sounds like an uber critical post, and in many ways it is, but I wanted to write it as I now understand how challenging this must be for our American colleagues here. Unless you have alot of money to spend, this is difficult. Good job that fasting means you save money.
