Day 107 Fast 36

by rawkaren on 05 Dec 2013, 08:34

Yesterday's calories 1399 (50 under TDEE, but I was tasting in the kitchen yesterday, so probably some slippage there)

Carbs 24% (83g)
Fat 55% (83g)
Protein 21% (70g)

Breakfast was a bulletproof coffee, one egg and paleo sandwich bread.
Lunch small fillet steak and a huge pile of brussel sprouts.

Plus taste testing of low carb cranberry muffins and pumpkin bread. I counted the calories for these but not for eating the cookie dough left at the bottom of the bowl which is always the best bit. Oh and I also ate a persimmon.

No exercise yesterday. It was a bit of a strange day all round. It's so dark here now in Northumberland at this time of year. As I write at 8.15am, its dark and stormy, it will be grey all day and yesterday it was almost dark at 3.30pm. Not helped by chatting to my mate in California yesterday who was enjoying the sunshine. Bah humbug.

I have been anxiously awaiting for postman pat to deliver CBB's Low Carb Vegetarian which I ordered last week at a bargain price from Amazon, courtesy of a heads up from @FatDog, but its still not here. As I have abandoned thoughts of Christmas shopping today due to a horrendous storm outside (gusts currently 90+mph), it better turn up this morning. But then again it's a fast day so I had probably better stay out of the kitchen.

I'm not sure whether to do double duty exercise today on account of my day off yesterday. My motivation is not there because I'm gripped by Dr Perlmutter's book Grain Brain http://www.drperlmutter.com/news/brainc ... erlmutter/, currently top of NY Times bestseller list. The hypothesis is that grains, carbs and sugars can kill your brain and not just limited to digestive and weight matters. It's a serious book and I wonder if potentially a game changer in years to come. He is advocating high fat, low carb  although carbs 60g or less is lower than I have and I'm not sure I could go that low. However I'm feeling rather pleased with myself that my no/lo grain quest is proving to have benefits wider than I had originally thought.

I have noticed for many years that grains had affected my mood. OH noticed it first in me. He was always careful with his words which tended to be along the lines of "you are in a better skin when you don't eat carbs". I used to put it down to high stress periods at work, but I have to admit to feeling more on an even keel without them and no black clouds now for quite a while. I was tested for gluten sensitivity about 25 years ago which came back positive, but I'm not coeliac, so maybe it's a blessing that I have always been aware of grains and gluten as well as carbs and sugar.

Well given the day is set to be horrid, maybe it's a good day to actually do a bit of work.

Good news at least Karen that the benefits of coconut oil are now being more widely advocated with regards to prevention of Alzheimers...not to mention coffee! x At least I'm doing something right consuming both!

I KNOW! It turns out in the next chapter that coconut oil is some kind of brain superfuel and reduces inflammation. It acts as a precursor in the body for beta-HBA, a ketone which enhances brain function. Good job I eat alot of it as this book is jolly hard reading for a layman :-)

Yes, really appreciate the manageable chunks you've been posting for us. My eyes and brain just seem to fog over with too much scientific data and terms I'm not familiar with! I can see sales of CO rocketing! x
