Great blog Karen! Can I ask did you just go cold turkey on eliminating sugar or gradually reduce it? Don't think I could manage it as I have a very sweet tooth! Good luck with your weigh in tomorrow. Carol x
Oh thank you @callyana
It took me about a week. I started with the obvious things like no choccies, puds, cakes etc.
Then migrated to no added sugars (I basically became a label freak). I never had added sugars in my drinks or drank sodas so this was helpful and never really bothered with things like diet hot chocolate (which has sugar in it).
The big step was to start to drop grains from my diet. I still do eat them, but a couple of times a week tops. I thought this might be a bit freaky, but honestly I don't miss them, and it cuts the carbs.
I have not given up fruit, and I still eat high carb fruit like banana but only in small amounts.
Also alcohol gets processed like sugar, but I like my wine. I had kahlua in my expresso martini earlier in the week (half measure), and it tasted so sweet it nearly blew my head off).
Its the best thing I have done in years.
Hope helpful.

Thanks Karen, certainly something worth thinking about. I don't eat white carbs but I do love a decent artisan rye or pumpernickel bread. I intend to have a go using coconut flour in a few recipes and will see how I get on reducing my carb intake further.

Day 73 Fast 22
by rawkaren on 01 Nov 2013, 16:35
Cals 1268 (Under)
Carbs 28% (89g) In range
Fat 50% (70g) In range
Protein 22% (69g) In range for a change
Breakfast - Small bulletproof coffee
Lunch - Bavette steak (flank), cavolo nero, slice banana bread (paleo)
Dinner - Blue cheese, radicchio, red onion and butternut squash bake with pecans, 1 slice of paleo bread, low fat, no sugar tea loaf (Hairy Dieters).
I have reached two conclusions from counting numbers this week. The first is that I'm actually not a very big eater, as I have really struggled and as I no longer have sugar cravings, food is often just not on my mind. The second is that I am putting down my previous weight gain down to booze (and then the munchies afterward). This is not a good thought, but when I think about it, my periods of being heavy have always co-incided with periods of heavy drinking. Especially when travelling, away on business, time zone trauma etc etc etc.
The day was interrupted by a visit to the vet as the cat had somehow managed to come in with his stopper paw (thumb), ripped off, well hanging off. His thumb was duly amputated by the vet and I picked him up looking very sad indeed as he was wearing one of those lampshades, so he knew he looked completely ridiculous at the same time as feeling very poorly. So I tried not to laugh as he would have been even more unhappy (cats know when you are laughing at them). It was not the usual vet and they didn't want him bandaged, but the lampshade is a stupid idea as any cat owner will tell you. It lasted about 10 seconds in the house as he ran into the door frame with it on, the safety clips broke and lo, he was free. I tried again, but a combination of him being terrified and also now knowing how to get out of it (smartest cat I have ever owned), and he is currently sans lampshade. He has to stay in for a week to protect from infection. That will not go down well either with him nor OH as it means litter tray duty
Exercise today was something called X stretch. This is basically akin to Iyengar yoga whereby you hold the position for longer than normal. It was one of those sessions where it hurts alot but in a good way. The revelations were the wrist flexor stretches and the foot flexor stretches. Hoping the wrist stretches help with strengthening my arms still further as I so want to be able to do press ups with a degree of ease..... My backside is still super achy which made the glute stretch particularly ouchy....
Diary is filling up next couple of weeks. You can tell folks are coming back from half term holidays. Wouldn't mind doing a 4:3 next week, Sun, Tues, Fri look ok OR I could do a back to back Mon/Tues and then Fri. Not sure about that as the training regime is tough.
Weigh in is tomorrow. Let's see if I have recovered enough damage from holiday horrors.
