Day 94. Fast 31

by rawkaren on 22 Nov 2013, 08:33

This post is nutritionally biased, so any carb/sugar/ketogenic experts out there, feel free to set me straight if I have misunderstood anything. Thank you.

Not sure what to eat for fast day today. Have already had a bulletproof coffee as I'm about to go into the gym. I have not trained for two days, but I'm still technically in 'recovery' week. I have also had two long days on the road.

Yesterday's numbers
Calories 1165 (around 180 cals under but margin for error in case I underestimated the cheese)
Carbs 26% (80g - Good)
Fat 54% (72g - in range)
Protein 20% (59g - bottom end of range)

It was a bit of an odd day for food. I broke the fast with a bulletproof, took my first meeting and for lunch had an ITSU no carb chicken and avocado salad with toasted seeds. Two large persimmons in the afternoon. Hopped on the train in the evening with a Cafe Nero expresso with whipped cream and a small piece of cheese on the train which I estimated at about 60g. This morning though, I feel a bit bloated compared to the day before. Dairy can have a crappy effect on me (although I seem to be ok with a bit of butter), so it might be that.

For the last couple of days I have had palpitations. Like my heart is racing away. My BP is fine this morning (107/74 at lowest to 116/71 at highest. Pulse between 62bpm and 65). I'm drinking just one coffee a day (after that I switch to decaff), so I doubt it is that. Over the last four days my carb rate has dropped to an average of 47g per day and no more than 80g on feed days. I'm wondering if my potassium levels have dropped too low, which I think can happen on ketogenic diets, so today I'm going to load up on coconut water, mushrooms and green veg to see how I feel. I might just be plain old dehydrated.

Continuing on the carb theme. As I have successfully sworn off most types of sugar now for 3 months, I have been thinking for quite a while of going to the next step and nixing alcohol too.

I know sugar in it's various forms has been discussed to death on the forums, and I didn't want to bore everyone to death with another attempt at going around the mulberry bush on the topic. However I was looking for a layman's explanation on the similarities between fructose and alcohol metabolism (because alot of Lustig's lecture goes over my head), and I have found one here http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... ctose.aspx

The sentence I liked the most said "Both ethanol metabolism and fructose metabolism lead to visceral adiposity (belly fat), insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome". I guess that is in addition to frying your liver. I think I have read enough to knock it on the head for a while. (But I might change my mind at Christmas  )

I'm still eating my fruit erring towards lower fructose fruits. Unfortunately this means taking care around my beloved persimmons and bananas (potassium  ) but I'm not going to sweat on it too much as Lustig reckons it's ok to to eat fructose with fibre and it's still paleo friendly. I found this if anyone is interested in the fructose content of fruits http://www.naturaleater.com/Support-Mat ... Tables.pdf

I have felt better this week not weighing myself. Having said that I have 'the fear' already this morning as weigh day is tomorrow.

Also yesterday was my three month fastiversary, so I need to take a photo of my muffin top again.

Fingers crossed for a good result on the scales tomorrow Karen. That naturaleater table was quite an eye opener, seems I prefer all the 'wrong' fruits fructose/GI wise (apricots, bananas and persimmons since trying them a while ago).My theory though is that their vitamin and fibre content compensate for any adverse effects so I will continue to enjoy them. As you have successfully eliminated most sugars from your diet (bar the dreaded alcohol!), then you could maybe indulge more in your favourite fruits? x

Thanks for that table. Nectarines are about to come in season so they can replace the daily apple.

Hi Carol. You are probably right because I LOVE custard apples and mangoes too   and they are probably alot better for you than wine

Karen, I truly admire your diligence and meticulous accounting of food groups. I feel quite sloppy in comparison.
