Fast 28

by rawkaren on 14 Nov 2013, 10:02

Its Thursday, and its becoming a regular fast day for me. My weight is down mysteriously overnight by over a pound and a half, so jumping for joy this morning. Yay!  It might not be that mysterious though for reasons in a moment.

Official check-in day for me is Saturday, but as I will be away, it will be tomorrow when I report my stats to The Christmas Club. :like:

Yesterday's calories 1172. This is below my TDEE by 282 but still higher than my MFP number
Carbs 46% (112g - in range)
Fat 35% (38g - in range)
Protein 19% (45g - below range)

I almost completed the Eat Stop Eat version of fasting yesterday http://bradpilon.com/introduction-to-in ... t-fasting/ (which is 24 hours without food), but not quite. I had to train about 20 hours after my last meal so I decided to have a bulletproof coffee, so technically I did not complete the trial, but the fat only intake probably meant that I was still in fat burning mode right up until the 24 hours when I did finally eat. Whether or not this accounted for an almost 2lb loss overnight after two weeks of bouncing up and down, I have absolutely no idea. So this was a combo of ESE and Bulletproof fasting http://www.bulletproofexec.com/bulletproof-fasting/. What I'm not sure about is whether I actually did two fasts in succession as the 24 hour break (instead of 16 hrs) was on the back of a fast day. However it didn't feel like it as I ate very well indeed yesterday. So calorie wise, the answer is no, but scheduling yes. However with hindsight I felt I didn't really do anything different than I have done previously, especially when I first started this WOE. As I have been training harder, I have been eating earlier, so its been a while since I waited until lunch for solid food, and also I had stopped eating at lunchtime the previous day, so maybe the answer is yes even though the net calorie deficit is the same, the scheduling could have made a difference. Also noting that I did not eat my TDEE as I was trying to make up for two days of TDEE over eating this week.

Today is a scheduled fast day and I was going to try a bulletproof fast day http://www.bulletproofexec.com/rapid-fat-loss-protocol/, which is basically bulletproof coffee only. I have decided I can't do a zero calorie fast during the day as I need the energy to train. My large bulletproof coffee is 220 calories which I have already had this morning and I'm now ready to train. Whether I will need more calories for the rest of the day, well lets see. As I'm short my fast day calories should be anywhere between 360 and 500. BTW I'm absolutely NOT advocating the rapid fat loss protocol on his website which is a five day fat only fast. I think that is way too extreme. I just like my research. Speaking of which, I found this really interesting. http://www.precisionnutrition.com/intermittent-fasting

Yesterday:
Breakfast - small bulletproof coffee
Lunch - prawn tagine and paleo sandwich bread. One pear
Mid afternoon snack - home made low fat tea loaf
Dinner - roasted spicy cauliflower (I ate a whole one), small glass of wine

I have also been reviewing what I ate when I first started this new WOE. It was not just fasting. I also became primal friendly which was no sugar, grains and dairy. More grains have crept into my diet and also dairy in the form of cheese. Sugar is still off the menu, but I have not nixed the alcohol, but to be honest I have enjoyed still losing weight whilst having the odd drink. I usually give up when I'm on a normal 'diet'. So I'm going to monitor grains and dairy again carefully over the coming weeks and see what happens. I might cut back on the alcohol a bit more, and I know that once I do that, I guarantee to lose weight. Might not be practical with seasonal parties etc etc.

Is this disordered eating? I have no idea. There was a thread on disordered eating this morning. At the moment I feel a need to explore and experiment what works and what does not with all of the different IF protocols and other ways of eating. I eat very healthily and normally all of my calorie allowance, so I think the answer to that is no. Maybe I'm just very disciplined right now and I'm taking advantage whilst I'm in the zone.

Not posting for a few days now as I'm away for the weekend, but I will check in on the Christmas Club tomorrow instead of Saturday.

Hi Karen , was very interested to find out how you'd got on today with your ESE fast and think you did remarkably well given you are also training so intensely at the moment. You are certainly giving these different approaches a good try and will be able to find your personal optimal WOE whilst experimenting and comparing results.
Have a good weekend and look forward to reading your future blogs x

Thanks Carol for your support! What an absolute brick you are. Really appreciate the encouragement. My weight was up slightly this morning after the bulletproof only fast and so reported a one pound loss to the Christmas Club this morning. Very happy that I might be moving again

Hey Karen, what an interesting blog. I'm going to have to come back and read some more later as don't have time now. I had been a bit scared to add fat into my diet intentionally as it goes against everything we've been brainwashed with. I did however lose loads on dukan about 6 yrs ago but it's so unsustainable. So I've bought butter, red meat and full fat yoghurt. That'll do for now. Have a great weekend.

Hi @carieoates. All I know is that I feel so much better eating fat and less sugar. Give it a whirl and see how you feel :like:
