Fast 40

by rawkaren on 16 Dec 2013, 12:46

I'm fasting today. Christmas entertaining started this weekend and if ever there was a time I should have heeded the advice I so willingly dole out to others, then this weekend was it.

I woke up this morning with fat fingers and a fat face. No headache but major brain fog. Gluten - check, sugar - check, alcohol - check. Two days of entertaining and being entertained have certainly taken their toll. The water retention is horrid and my brain has been slow this morning and my hips and knees are creaky. I'm glad I did my yoga though - all of those backbends have left me very energised, despite poisoning myself.

I prefer to entertain as I can take care over what foods to prepare and I know what is in them. One of my guests is coeliac and that suits me fine as it means that I can indulge us both and she always loves the fact that she does not feel excluded.

Saturday was fine. We were out and I kept away from the sugary nasties and stuck with steak and salad but as it's Christmas, alot of wine was consumed. Yesterday I prepared an informal supper for my guests. Parmesan custards made with coconut milk served with anchovy sourdough toasts, duck baklava and green salad. The baklava is a greek dish but very festive as it contains confited duck, and a 'hummus' of butter beans, onions, garlic, oregano and cinnamon. You basically layer it up - hummus, duck, feta, dates, ground almonds, and then go round again, wrapped in filo. I made one with gluten free crepes instead of the filo for my coeliac friend and it meant I could partake too. Big cheese board with only sheeps and goats cheese, oat crackers, dried fruits etc and some fruit and nut bites in 100% cacao mix. So far so good.

I had quite a few German friends over. They tend to be exceedingly generous with their gifts for the host. Apple cake, chocolate marzipan, stollen, gingerbread, wine, etc etc. So the combination of the sourdough toasts, apple cake, chocolate marzipan. Well you have to be polite don't you. As I had drank too much champagne and wine, I didn't stop at a polite bite.... So that's how I ended up with a fat face and fat fingers.

So another party tomorrow to navigate. I'm going to be driving so I'm not too worried about this one as it means there is no chance of going off the rails. Two more this week so it looks like a proper feast and fast week.

Hi Karen

Just catching up with your blog ! Not been on the forum as much !

Wow, I can imagine how you feel after entertaining/being entertained ! I can't eat nothing like the troughs I used to manage let alone a few days of it, so will be interesting to see how I cope over xmas. Body is going into bloated mode even though I hadn't indulged.

Do you think if I camp out at the bottom of your garden you could feed me ? You have some lovely food once again :)

and no one can drink to much champers ! My NYE treat. I have my bottle of Laurent Perrier Rose (my once a year treat)all ready for this year. Possibly the OH might not manage his half of the bottle as he is 5/2 as well and cut alot of drinking out, unlike moi, apart from fast days, so all the more for me !

Well Gill, Maybe you are my sister after all (ear muffs, jeans and now champagne). I adore LP rose too. :like: Like you say, a once a year treat. As for my left overs, I donated them to @candicemarie in the Temptation Tent, so pop over, I'm sure she has not chucked them all out yet. Today's fast needs to be a good one!
