Our of Practice Blogging here...

by rawkaren on 18 Jan 2015, 02:57

Not sure what to write - it has been so long since I posted here! Since the November post, I did go back to fasting until the end of the year. It is a habit that has been so firmly ingrained, the familiarity has become reassuring to me. But what is the point of fasting when on non-fast days, I eat too much?
So very deliberately starting in 2015 I made a special effort not to fast. It was so very hard, but I knew deep down that I needed to address my relationship with food as a priority before it gets completely out of control.

The first thing that happened was that I read this http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens ... t-fat.html and made a start. There is nothing earth shattering about this plan apart from the fact that there is alot less food than I have been eating in this past...

Being More Alkaline

by rawkaren on 22 Nov 2014, 15:14

Since my last blog, I got my saliva test results back. I had wanted to better understand what might be contributing to my slow rate of loss. I have been on another forum where they were following the kind of IF protocol I had been on for the month. We had all pretty much started together. People were losing 7 to 10lbs. My loss was 1lb. It was making me sad and frustrated.
My tests showed that my cortisol was on the low end - a sign of adrenal exhaustion which is hardly surprising given the year I have had. My DHEA-S was slightly high which is unusual in this combination. Whilst a strong DHEA-S score is great when you are very young, in could be signs of insulin resistance in someone older. So it was such a contradiction I just did not know what to do for the best.
So I stopped fasting, gave up caffeine and gave up being low carb. I wanted to reduce the stress on my adrenals before I started to have major problems. I have also been taking an adrenal support formula. I felt better...

Why the Scales Never Lie

by rawkaren on 01 Nov 2014, 16:35

Well it is 1st November and I am devastated with how little I have lost thi months despite all of my efforts. To re-motivate myself, I looked at the trend lines on my Withings scale as show below. The data shows the last two months and the trend is certainly in the right direction. I'm particularly happy with the drop in body fat. Given things seem to be going down at last after all of this time, maybe I should keep going and accept that at my age, I just have to knuckle down and work with the pace of my body.

Completely Different Food

by rawkaren on 19 Oct 2014, 19:29

I have just about changed over my store cupboard ingredients - putting my old 'healthy' stuff on the top shelf and re-stocked with keto friendly food. Well the healthy stuff was not doing anything so I figured I have nothing to lose. I'm a bit disappointed that I have only lost a couple of pounds since I started the Christmas Challenge, but when I look at my overall trend, it is certainly moving in the right direction. My bodyfat is also trending down which is the number I'm more interested in. However I am so very close to being back in the healthy BMI range - I'm hoping I will be there next week. I have not been there since April so it will be a fabulous achievement if I can get to that place again.
This particular way of eating seems to be suiting me for now. This morning I woke up and did not feel hungry until lunchtime. I could not even manage a bulletproof coffee. This is unusual for me as I normally need to eat something in the morning even on fast days.
Today I have chicken...

More Research

by rawkaren on 18 Oct 2014, 04:20

Living and working in Silicon Valley means I'm surrounded by geeks who spend alot of time talking about biohacking and continuing to find ways to improve fitness and mental performance. Bulletproof IF is de-rigueur here, but it all seems geared towards blokes.

So I was intrigued when I spotted that a women called Skye St. John had devised a female version, based on her own experience and leveraging other resources such as Ferris 4 Hour Body and others. No Fail Fat Burning for Women is available on Amazon. It's cheap and can be read in a couple of hours. It's on Amazon worldwide distribution and available on Kindle too for only £2.45.

So I'm on day 7 of her carb depletion phase where carbs need to be 30g or less. On day 10 is a carb refeed after a short intense exercise using 'safe' carbs such as sweet potato, white rice and squash (not junk!). There is no point in getting on the scales as the water will be deceptive. I'm more interested in my body fat loss, which is what I'm working ...
