15 weeks and 24 pounds

15 weeks and 24 pounds

I'm at the end of my 15th week doing 5:2 and I've been reflecting and doing some number crunching so thought it was a good time to record a bit more detail on my journey.

REDHEAD
I've never been hugely overweight, but at the start of this year I was tipping the overweight BMI category and really felt heavy after slowly putting on about 2 stone in the last 5-10 years (I'm in my mid 30s). I was nearly 12 stone at the start of the year and about 5ft 8. I certainly felt big and had difficulty finding clothes that looked nice.

I was up and down in weight during the last 10 years - losing a bit, putting a bit on and so on. But I've never dieted (couldn't ever stick to anything - I have terrible willpower) so my weight was never in my control. I only lost when I was busy at work or whatever. Not because I made a conscious, controlled choice.

I discovered the Eat Fast Live Longer programme and book in January and decided to give it a go. I often skipped breakfast...

60 hour/ two day water fasts

60 hour/ two day water fasts

So as many of you on here know, I water fast for 36-40 hours twice a week.

I find 36 hours with no food much easier than trying to count calories and have a small meal during a fast day. In fact, I find it so easy I intend to do it for the rest of my life, albeit reduced to one day a week when I reach my target weight. I have experienced wonderful benefits which I bang on about quite a lot all over this board.

I've also done two 60 hours fasts before - last meal on Sunday night and nothing except water right through until Wednesday morning. The first time I did it was almost by accident. I have a crazy job and I just didn't get time to eat on the day after my normal fast. I didn't feel hungry when I got home, so decided not to eat and see how I got on. I like to experiment with things like that. The smallest change can give the greatest satisfaction. My husband and I take pretty unusual holidays to see wildlife and unexplored places and I like to keep...

Side effects - positive and negative.

by redhead on 01 Apr 2013, 14:55

I think the blog feature here is a brilliant idea! There's quite a bit of talk about side effects on the forum so I thought this would be a good place to record my experience after 10 weeks on the 5:2 diet.

I don't have any negative side effects anymore and am hoping that the positives (losing weight, feeling great) will continue.

SIDE EFFECTS
Most of the negative side effects I experienced disappeared after about a month:

At first fasting did make me feel slightly odd. Nothing unbearable though. On the first few fast days I noticed a tightening if my jaw in the evening, but that subsided by about mid February. I also noticed the vague and not unexpected feeling of an empty stomach on fast days. It's pretty easy to ignore. I like to think of Kate Moss's quote occasionally - 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' which reminds me that the occasional empty stomach is a good thing to be enjoyed. I did, and still do, get an unpleasant tasting mouth, mainly because I smoke and drink...
