I sit here, on Fast day 2, thinking of things to do to keep me occupied as I sip my water through lunch time and try not to think about being hungry. I know, I thought, I will sort out the menu for the Braai I am hosting in 2 weeks for my Dh's work colleagues. (For those of you not familiar with the South African term a Braai is a Barbeque!!)
So I pulled out my recipe books and got going - failing for a good while to note the irony of planning meals whilst trying to avoid thinking about food!!
However, this task has got me through the morning and soon I will leave to do the school pick up - after which I wont have a spare second to eat anyway!!

Benefits of fasting so far:

feeling much less bloated
weekly shop lasting longer!
dog enjoying long walks to get me away from the fridge!!

I am a little concerned that from tomorrow I have 3 days of 'normal' eating - will I undo all my good work this week.

Weigh in on Monday.

As you know, if you have read my previous blogs, the last couple of weeks have been a bit tough. I have seen some improvement this week - though marginal.

I had a good fast day on Monday, made a thai prawn noodle soup, it was delicious. On Tuesday I went shopping in Newcastle with my grandson and daughter. For lunch I had a saintly starter and a tiny bowl of my daughter's main, again it was Thai. I do love the stuff I have to say. The flavours are amazing and the calories really low.

When we had finished being dragged around by the purse (painfully), we hit Costa's. I had an Americano - black no sugar, my poison of choice and my daughter bought me a gluten free choc cake? biscuit? I give up. I couldn't decide what it was, but I ate it anyway. It tasted okay. But, after I had eaten it, I checked the calories. It had 525! ...

Bought some snazzy new scales, the kind that give you BMI plus weight plus how hydrated I am. I will try them out at my next weigh in on Friday. My old and trusty step on, step off scales weren't so accurate and I am sure that I very slightly lowered the weight given in the past as I couldn't see it very well!
A bit of a dilemma today. Decided to change my fast days this week to Tuesday and Thursday as I am experimenting with my days. A lot for me depends on what I am doing and if I am out in the evening for a meal. When I meet friends this is usually what I do (go out for a meal that is) and I prefer to save my 500 cals for when I am home to cook.
Right, I best get ready for work.

When I weighed myself yesterday morning, I was a bit concerned that I might have blown my attempts at getting to below 11 and a half stone at this morning's weigh-in as a result of some over-indulging on Saturday. I had only once before, lost weight on a feeding day, and that was a week ago when I was acting to get my weight down from 75.2kg. On that particular occasion, I lost 4 pounds which is in line with I would normally lose on a fasting day.

With my weight going up from 11 stone 2 pounds to 11 and a half stone in just a...

My trial fortnight resulted in gaining 1lb, so I had to rethink my approach. Decided that 'fasting' for 24h and eating whatever I wanted in between wasn't going to work for me. When you think about it, how could it? The maths just doesn't add up - you can easily consume many more calories over the non-fast days to void the good work done on the fasting days. So, I'm slightly annoyed with myself for wasting that fortnight - although on the positive side, I have learnt something from it.

My first 'proper' fast went from 7pm Sunday 15th Dec until 7am Tuesday 17th December. It was quite hard. I felt hungry in waves throughout the day - I found it difficult to distract myself sufficiently not to think about food continually! Never mind - I went to Mindfulness in the evening and that really helped. Sleep was intermittent as I was aware of a headache, hunger pains and I couldn't shut my brain down - one of my children has MS and he is experiencing some symptoms that are worrying him.

When I...
