The biggest perceived enemy we all have is our ability to seemingly sabotage any good intentions from within and in this blog I am hoping to share some thoughts that can help direct the unconscious in a more supportive way - as this is exactly what it is there for.
Our unconscious mind only has our best intentions at heart and will remind us of this at every opportunity it can. The downside is that it is incredibly poor at processing the word 'not'. If I said to you "do not think of a pink elephant with blue spots on it" - what has just popped in to your mind??? That's right - a pink elephant with blue spots on it. This is because the "not" part is ignored - like it always is. It is ignored in me, in you, and even in our children! (recall how many times you ask them "not" to do something and they go and do the very thing...)
Also imagine how difficult it would be to make a shopping list completely full of all the things that you don't want when you next go...

After a thoroughly miserable day, here in Wild West Wales the sun is out and the sea is looking beautiful - but damn cold! Done well today - no solids till tea time when I had a M&S "Fuller Longer" Meatballs and Pasta. Not bad for 380 Cals so I had a mini Milky Way for pudding.

It has been really windy today and this always makes the dog stupid (in Cymraeg - ci twp - it may well be his new name!) so when were out today he chased a bus, a car, snapped at a pug and also had a go at another collie. So, the wound up dog got me wound up but despite my understandable "anxious state" I did not resort to alcohol or dark chocolate digestives!

HOWEVER, as I still have about a hundred calories to play with, I may well allow myself a small sherry at bed time.

I was watching myself in the mirror, and for the first time in I don't know how long I felt good about myself. It is not that I have lost a lot of weight, but I realized that I got back to the weight that has been my average weight for years (with many ups and downs). It is a sustainable weight as long as I don't let it go up like this past summer.

Of course I want to lose weight because I am overweight and have way too much belly fat, but I will accept myself the way I am without going into guilt trips or getting disgusted and knowing that I am doing something about it. So, on top of following the 5:2 WOE, I will take good care of my appearance every single day, it really makes a difference! I will wear clothes that fit me and when the time comes and I lose some inches, wear the clothes that fit me best then. No worries, I have a good supply in my wardrobe ...

So hubby and I have decided to give 5:2 a go as we are both have at least 3 1/2 stone to lose and we want to do it safely.

We managed fast day 1 on Tuesday this week with only a minor fluff - I went under by about 30 calories thanks to a miscalculation on my part. As it was the munchies didn't hit during the evening when I was most worried about as our 4 year old daughter had a major strop and when we finally sorted her out I was too drained to even consider eating!

Due to my too much/ too little calculation on Tuesday I have forgone any milk in my coffee at all today and so I have calories enough for a low cal hot chocolate. Woo hoo, never thought I'd be so happy about that. :victory:

We'll have to see how it goes but I have now got a new torture - I food shop on Friday evenings, which is fine as it's a feast day. However, the food planning is done tonight... Groan!

There's an old saying about working smarter, not harder; and I'm sure there must be another one saying diet smarter, not harder. I started paying attention to the number of calories different foods have and there's a world of difference in them. I think you could eat most vegetables and fruit all day long and still lose weight because they don't have that many calories. The key seems to be to cut back on meat, breads, pastas, alcohol and of course junk foods (potato chips, etc.) - the stuff I usually eat. Knowing what to do is one thing, actually doing what you're suppose to do is another. Cheers...I mean, have a kiwi....
