Introduce Yourself!

Our Frequently Asked Questions topic will answer many of your fasting & weight loss questions!

If you're new and have a question or need some advice, please give us as much information as you can about your situation in order for us to be able to help you as best we can. For example, it's helpful to know your BMI/weight, how much you want to lose, any medical conditions which might affect your weight and (if you've started fasting already) how you do your fasts in terms of splitting up your calories, what you eat etc. Thanks!

In scrolling back through the last few months of the "View Unanswered Posts" forum I've noticed that quite a few new members have only posted one time. Why?

It seems that their introductory posts are NOT appearing in the more commonly used Active or New post pages. So...

By not receiving any replies, it would seem to imply that "No one's home" (or cares). Now THAT would be most discouraging...even disrespectful. And we all know that's not true here.

@moogie may be able to correct this - (make that intro-post delay time zero, please) , but in the mean time other active members might periodically check the Unanswered page to encourage and increase active participation.

Good point,

I will suggest again my idea that a standard welcome reply (containing reference to the LEARN pages etc) be given to all newbies when the administrator approves the new member. This would then also have the benefit that the post will occur in the active topics list.

I don't always greet newbies since there have been so many times I have spent considerable time on a reply and we don't hear from them anymore. And I don't often greet people who say very little or don't appear quite "genuine".

With the above suggestion, if a newbie then responds to the standard reply, there may be a better chance that they will be someone who will keep on contributing, and it will become worth our effort to write a reply.

NB I guess a "Welcome x" post doesn't take much time, but if x has asked questions, then there is some pressure to respond to that.

It is disheartening when you take time to respond to s newbie and then they never post again but from their point of view they are probably disappointed at how few people are currently posting here. It's not very encouraging to only get one or two posts a day!

Fair point, but the situation of newbies only posting once was just as common when the forum was busy.

I would have thought that before you join a forum you would spend at least a few days reading and assessing how useful it will be to you. Newbies nowadays would then know that the forum is not very active.

This is the only form of social media I am involved with, but wonder if for some people, they join all sorts of sites but commit to very few??

Yes this is a true point. Why we only last week had two new members that I replied to and asked about intended fasting routine - and never had a reply. I don't see what else we can do really. We all responded with a friendly welcome but we can't force people to continue. Its just such a shame that this forum is so quiet now when it used to be so lively!!

But, yes, a pre-written welcome page for newbies sounds like a good idea - just in case we miss them. At least they will be made to feel welcome!

Bean
Bump.

I just welcome-messaged two new members in the last few minutes, so thought I'd refresh this post as a reminder for other regulars!

I think that it is less of a problem now, as Moogie posted that the registration issues are fixed. So I think we will see their posts quicker now!

Or even once?

Don't all new members have to post once??

I think just to start posting, you can probably register and not post anything.

I certainly don't think there have been 57 new posts in the last 18 days!!!

From the Members page, which supports column sorting! (who knew?), and paging in order to count:

534 new members since January 1st.
34 of which posted only once.
18 that posted more than once. (These are NOT counted as part of the 34.)

So (34+18)/534 = .097 or roughly 10% post at least once. The rest? Zero.
