Hi
My name is Pashanie and I am new to the forum. I would like to hear from other people on anti-inflammatory meds and what is the most effective fasting schedule to lose weight. I have an auto- immune illness called sarcoidosis and have had 3 infusions of Inflimab and on prednisolone and mycophenalate. Also had my thyroid removed and on thyroxin. I have done a water and bone broth fast for 24hrs and a week later for 48hrs. also trying to reduce carbs and sugar. Has been very difficult to shift the weight especially around the belly. Would appreciate feedback.

Hi @Pashanie

We do not discuss fasts longer than 36 hours on this board, unless they are being done under a doctor's supervision/direction. In which case, you should ask your doctor about fasts of that duration.

I am not a doctor, but I have taken Prednisone before and if I remember correctly, it's a medicine that causes weight gain. It's a very necessary medicine, sometimes, but it can make weight loss very difficult. The good news is that your hard work is preventing weight gain while on this medication, but I'm afraid that you might not lose much.

Reducing carbs and sugar is a fantastic idea, as carbs cause inflammation. how low carb are you going?

You could try going low carb/high fat, reducing to 60g carbs per day (or even lower, if you are inclined) and add either two fast days per week (24-36 hours each -- as in no eating after dinner Sunday night, up to roughly 500 calories on Monday, then breakfast as usual Tuesday), or you could try eating windows (my endocrinologist's favorite), which means basically restricting eating to 8 hours a day or so (for example, noon to 8pm).

Best of luck

Hi and welcome!

You should find some relevant info here:
https://www.fastday.com/fasting/is-it-s ... medicines/
While we are unable to give medical advice, it is usually recommended to take corticosteroid/glucocorticoid with food to avoid stomach irritation, so you may find a feeding window, as Tracie sugested, is a better method for you, perhaps combined with low carb (careful with high fat though as these meds can encourage fat storage while preventing the body from burning fat.)

We'd love to hear how you get on and wish you all the best with your weight loss journey.

Thank you for your reply. I will try the feeding window approach and will stay low carb and also low fat.
Here starts a journey!

Hope it goes well for you :)

While it may be a good idea not to go the high-fat route alongside the low carb, do be careful of 'low fat' products - usually they have a load of added sugars, sweeteners and other chemicals which your body is better off without :) Keep to health fats in moderation and I'm sure you'll be fine. Be sure to discuss your plans with your doctor too!
