Ah ha!

So you're saying that it should read:

""3 of whom have lost a total of 10.96lbs over a period of 1 week and 4 days.
This equates to an average of 3.07lbs or median of 2.99lbs lost per member per week..." "

;-)

Well, if I was going to word it like that it would need to say it was over an average period of just to be clear ;) But I thought the combined total made more sense to display (and it is worded as such, although you didn't highlight the word 'combined' in your earlier posts so perhaps you hadn't really noticed that part) since the combined total weight loss is shown too :)

Hope you don't think I've been argumentative, just trying to explain where the figures were coming from as I could have sworn they were right ;) No hard feelings eh? :)

Hi Moogie,

"you didn't highlight the word 'combined' in your earlier posts so perhaps you hadn't really noticed that part"

I like that... no I hadn't :-)

"I could have sworn they were right "

"No hard feelings eh?"
None at all and likewise? I guess I don't like that linear age related trend and being towards the upper end, it bothers me! :-(

So these young'uns lost 3lbs in their first week of dieting (which doesn't sound too bad putting it that way)?

Glad we're all good :) Yes, it's a shame it seems that the older we get the harder it is to lose weight - but perhaps we'll find the figures change a bit as more users enter more data. 3 pieces of data for the younger group isn't very much to go on yet :)

Could this trend just be that each of the age bands has sequentially logged data for increasing time periods? So the younger age bands show the usual rapid weight loss that you get at the start of a diet(WOL) [except for me!]...

Examples:

18-25

"3 of whom have lost a total of 10.96lbs over a combined total of 3 weeks and 4 days.
This equates to an average of 3.07lbs or median of 2.99lbs lost per member per week..."

As discussed this appears to be over a period of 1+ week and is a statistically low number (3 members).

26-35

"60 forum members matching your selection are using the tracker, 25 of whom have lost a total of 157.54lbs over a combined total of 73 weeks and 4 days.
This equates to a mean average of 2.15lbs or median average of 1.99lbs lost per member per week."

So this is 73/60 = 1.21 weeks

36-45

"167 forum members matching your selection are using the tracker, 98 of whom have lost a total of 633.03lbs over a combined total of 380 weeks and 1 days.
This equates to a mean average of 1.71lbs or median average of 1.16lbs lost per member per week. "

So this is 380/167 = 2.27 weeks

46-60

"102 of whom have lost a total of 744.24lbs over a combined total of 490 weeks and 3 days.
This equates to an average of 1.53lbs or median of 1.23lbs lost per member per week..."

So this is 490/102 = 4.8 weeks each on average

61-74

"25 forum members matching your selection are using the tracker, 13 of whom have lost a total of 122.51lbs over a combined total of 122 weeks and 1 days.
This equates to a mean average of 1lbs or median average of 0.77lbs lost per member per week. "

So this is 122/25 = 4.88 weeks on average

It would be interesting to compare the first week of logged data for each age band. Perhaps the older age bands which correspond with the 4 or more weeks on the WOL are more accurate? After a month on the 5:2 your at about 1 lb a week (which is what it says in the book)...

There again, maybe I'm still missing something? :-)

Sorry I wasn't around for the earlier part of this discussion, but Moogie and LastChance seem to be finding the light at the end of the tunnel...

Yes I think you have hit on it! I looked again at medians for the age groups, but only those who had been on the diet for less than 1 month and only those doing 5:2. The results I saw are:

Age 18-25: (2 people): 3.75 lbs each per week
Age 26-35: (20 people): 2.1 lbs each per week
Age 36-45: (84 people): 1.94 lbs each per week
Age 46-60: (77 people): 1.99 lbs each per week
Age 61-74: (6 people): 2.22 lbs each per week

Sorry for lapsing into imperial measurements, this is my choice for my tracker!

So apart from the very youngest group, which is clearly not a statistically significant sample, and have (as LastChance pointed out) only been dieting for a week or so, the weight losses are comparable for all age groups.

Seems I may have started a hare unnecessarily about the differences in weight loss between age groups  , but hopefully we have learned something, if only about the dangers of making simple deductions from statistics! ;)

"Seems I may have started a hare unnecessarily about the differences in weight loss between age groups"

On the contrary! The final outcome is wonderful news for all (that "the weight losses are comparable for all age groups"). Furthermore, that the range is around 2 lbs weekly. It will be very interesting to see how this develops in future months as more data is gathered.
