The disappointed bit...

I' ve been working out quite a bit on the treadmill and bike. The results? No gain(or loss should isay).
I guess as a result I ve been eating more and it hasn't achieved much.

One of the stewards at the museum ( where I'm a vol) said he'd been doing 5;2 so I thought ....ok......nothing for it, back to fasting.

This is the good bit.
Over the past week or so I've been doing alternate day fasting and lost half an inch/almost half a stone.

I don't know why the exercise wasn't shifting it but ......hey ho.....at least I ve found some thing that does.

Another fast day tomorrow.

From multiple studies, strenuous exercise (weight lifting, HIIT) supports retaining muscle mass during weight loss by preventing protein from being burned for energy and for that reason it's worth doing. By itself, exercise is close to useless as an effective way to lose any appreciable weight.

Case in point: A marathon runner might burn one pound (.5kg) of fat during that 26 miles (42km). Can you see yourself doing that? How about completing another 9 marathons on top of that to lose 10 pounds (5kg)?

I think not haha.

It would be the last thing I did if I tried it.

Sorry, I was unclear.
I meant really reduction of flab around my gut. True enough, muscle weights more than fat so as you convert fat to muscle so weight loss does not occur in a strict sense.
I just wasn't experiencing any reduction in fat around the stomach area which was slightly disappointing.
Fasting every other day (with some gentle cardio) was having better results. Another fast day tomorrow.

Hi,

I agree it's diet for weight loss and exercise for fitness. You can tone and change the shape of your body, build muscles and the all important sustaining muscle strength but not lose weight unless you hammer it constantly. A study done in the UK by the NHS showed that people lost no weight in a year buy adding 30 mins of exercise 3 times a week. This is the government guide lines here. They are now being changed to inform people that we need to change our diets to lose weight.

In my first 10 weeks I didn't do any exercise, I just fasted and reduced my calories on NFDs too. I lost 30lbs.

Good luck

NOt ADF as such....I've done 5;2.
I haven't done it for a bit , replacing portion /calorie control with the ex bike and treadmill but obviously wasn't working to any extent.

I have to admit now there were just too many calories (even focusing on veggies) going down my gob.

I was hoping half an hour ex's a day and relatively sensible diet would do it. It did not.

But fantastic that you have found what does works David! A mix of 5:2 or ADF. I FAST 2 /3 days depending on how heavy my social life is on the weekends.

It's so easy to eat above and beyound your TDEE if you don't at least for a littke while count calories, weight and measure properly and make better choices. Plus the mindless eating you forget about while preparing food or just grabbing easy to eat food from the fridge. Although you think you're gaining weight because you ate lots of veggies it's actually the other stuff you eat that turn to fat, not the veg.

Well done and keep us posted on your weekly weight. Mine has slowed down from 3/4lbs to 2/3lbs as my weekends become more busy lol.

Good luck.

Possibly, yes, I have had few cashew nuts recently.

Yes, I measured 38 inches this morning which is defo a good sign. Fasting is quite hard work in its way but as you say, at least I 've switched my body to fat burning at long last. No more treats though.
Keeping a supply of lemon juice (freshly squeezed) is important for me.

Don't forget to count the calories in the lemons on fast days David. They become more and more easy. I fast for 24 hrs. Just have water and one main meal at 8pm. You just train your body to get used to it. The fasting in return reduces your appetite and cravings on none fast days.

I suppose that's the trouble I can't really get down to calorie counting to any extent.......that's 25......this is 50....I've never been that foodie to do that.

I suppose that's why it's better for me to ADF, you know you are zero'd for that day, its a real hassle but it's got to be got through. Then you're free the next day.

No more cashews for me any way. It's been too hard work for that. :-/

Thanks.

edit; it would be very nice to kick the cravings into touch.....is that a real possibility?

Good reminder.
I find it good way to keep digestion alkali but I heeded your point last night and went at boiled water later on......not lemon juice.
