I think I did it in about 35 mins. Mapmyrun says 35,25, but I forgot to turn it off as soon as I crossed the line! Mapmyrun also says it was 5.25 km :-)

Well done Melanie, I managed a pb today of 27:11' so I'm well pleased.

I saw a fabulous motivational picture on Facebook this week, which said something like:

In a race, don't worry about beating the other runners. The only battle you have to win is with the voice in your head, which says you can't do it.

So I was giving a lot of "you can do this" under my breath.

34.31, a personal best (not that there was much to better from...)

3rd in my age category, and a good base to improve from!

I was the 30 minute pacer today at my parkrun so no PB.I'm usually quite breathless at the finish but holding back that little bit meant that I finished quite comfortably. How did any other parkrunners do today?

Thank you for starting this thread I have just checked out the link and the first one near(ish) me is 14th April. I have looked for other running clubs in the past and they are all in the evening when I am training elsewhere. I can't wait and would never have known about it if I hadn't seen it here :-)

I had a TERRIBLE run today! I took my dog max along, as he usually runs with me. But he was freaked out by all the excitement, and was really hard to control. We made it round, but my time will be awful. And his park run career is over, the big eejit.

Official result- 34.40
Since last week was 34.31, I'm really impressed that all the faffing about with max only cost me 9 seconds. All set for a new pb next week!

I'm so glad you've found a parkrun :like: My Saturday mornings have never been the same. I get up early and help with the set-up and put the kit away at the end so if you want you can get involved in more than just the running. I can well understand why we often get 300+ turn up. It really is a great weekly event.

Our Parkrun has a number of people who run with dogs. They (the dogs) do get used to it and get more disciplined during the run. The only problem is they get so impatient at the start when the announcements are being made that all you can hear is howling dogs that can't understand why everyone is waiting around and not getting on with the running

I do have to record my appreciation of the organisers and other runners, who really didn't make me feel uncomfortable with Max and his obvious anxiety...but I think I'll be a bit more relaxed doing my Park Runs solo. I took him out for my Long Run this morning, and we had a really lovely 5 mile run together. So I think we can be happy splitting it that way - speed trials on a Park Run by myself, and distance runs on quiet country roads with my doggie.

Hi, I just made a superflous post about exercise.. I'm just thinking that I'd like to give running a go. Two days in a row I felt like running when I was just going to the shops and in no particular hurry. I think losing this baggage has made me feel lighter, vaguely thinking of giving it a go tomorrow (weather permitting). How did you get in to it? How often do you go out? With these park runs do you just turn up or do you have to a be a little bit fit? If it's raining I might try using the rebounder.

Hi itadakimasu,
I just saw this thread and being a runner myself read it all.
As I said I love running, but go a bit longer than the 5k of a parkrun. We don't have those kind of things here in Italy so it is just traininig and the races we have that are organised almost every week. I believe that whatever the distance someone runs, it is great that with the idea of loosing weight we add some kind of activity and running (or swimming or cycling) is great. It will certainly improve your cardiovascular system and streghten therefore you heart. From a weight loss point of view it won't give you any significant results (but still better than nothing and don't forget the benefits), because for the body to start consuming fat you need to run (or do an aerobic activity) at least for an hour and more at an heart rate level that is around 125/130bpm (depending on maxHR of course). If some of you talk about PB means that you are running at your best and therefore going into anaerobic and consuming mostly (we do consume fat but a lower %) gycogen that is readily available. As I said the most important thing is getting off the couch and not finding excuses (like many, it seems to read) to give a proper hand to this diet that looks very easy to do and manage.
Have a great day to those that fast and don't today (me).
Ciao

For the parkruns, it's helpful if you register online beforehand, then you just turn up with your barcode. I think they can help you register on the day, though, if you get there in enough time.

If you're just starting, take it easy, don't try to run too fast. There's a useful app called Couch to 5k (C25K) which many new runners find very helpful.
