Sleeping Less

I wrote the same post in the Negative side effects/experiences thread, but I thought I'd garner more replies by making a separate thread.

Hi everyone

I am not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, but here goes. Since I began my weight loss journey, I've been sleeping less (about 4-5 hours per night, at most 6 hours), but not feeling tired at all when I wake. In fact, I feel more energized and sharper than before I started dieting. I don't get tired during the day and don't need naps. I drink coffee and tea on a daily basis, about 4-5 cups of coffee (at most), and 2 tsp of loose leaf green tea/black tea per day. I am currently not exercising, and just focusing on my nutrition. I've never had problems sleeping before prior to my weight loss regime, but I am concern that health problems may arise if I continue to lack sleep. I've been having this problem for about 2-3 weeks now. I am not on any medication nor medically diagnosed with any sleeping problems. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the group MisterChew, and congrats on your amazing progress!

As your body gets adjusted to burning fat again it's quite normal to experience shorter sleep, better sleep and to wake refreshed within a rather narrow time window. I have a SleepSense - a coin sized electronic gadget attached to my pillow that measures and quantifies sleep quality. For a long time now it's been reporting a steady (and boring) 82-84 out of a presumed 100. Any light or disruptive sleep that I may experience is quickly traced to what I had the night before - a sweet something is always the cause.

Breathing should be noticeably easier at night. Snoring - which of course requires another's surprised realization - is also a thing of the past. No more early morning throat-clearing coughing either.

Ever have an early morning stuffy nose? Bet you ate something with wheat in it (breads, pasta, ...) the night before.

Finally, exercise is an ideal way to retain muscle mass. No need to push it here. Start easy when it feels right.

4-5 cups of coffee PLUS tea in one day is an awful lot of caffeine. Perhaps you were eating so much before that the extra food helped blunt the effect of so much caffeine (I get sleepy when I eat too much).
I'll bet if you have two cups of coffee and then switch to decaf, you'll probably sleep better/more.

Yes I definitely do feel that my throat and mouth is more clear and less dry when I wake up in the morning. Thanks for the reply. :)

1 cup is 8oz., a grande at Starbucks is 16oz, so 4-5 cups would be about 2 grande coffees from Starbucks. Is that alot? Haha.. I guess I am drinking too much caffeine.

Thanks for your suggestion!
