Hair Loss?

Hello all - I'm new to the 5:2 world. I seem to be losing weight quite quickly (7.6 pounds after 2 weeks), and am concerned about possible hair loss. I lost 45 pounds in 3 months two years ago and my hair was like a waterfall. It was devastating. My doctor said it was most likely due to the rapid weight loss causing stress in my body. I have my hair back now, and don't want to lose it again. Have any of you had a similar experience with the 5:2 diet?

Hi and welcome! There is a thread about this in the forum named "general 5:2 diet, health & fitness chat" that you might want to check out. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1904

Started on the forum on Monday but this is my second week doing 5:2 and I wondered if anyone had experienced hair loss as a side effect of the diet? When I've dieted before (and I admit, I've probably been way too low on the calorie intake) I've always had a problem a month or so into the diet when my hair starts to fall out! and I really don't want that to happen again. It comes back again when I start to eat normally (for me) and I take a vitamin and mineral supplement, but I'm hoping that it just won't happen with 5:2.

Any ideas or experiences of it?

Would you like me to merge this topic into the other one, or lock this one & include a link to the other topic?

It's no trouble, we often have the same things asked time and again. I can't say hair loss has come up quite so often as some other questions! Will merge the threads :)

hmm.... I've had problems with hair thinning since my early twenties, probably since I had my daughter actually. It's the bane of my life, well, of my vanity anyway. But now that I think about it, it does seem to have stabilised in recent months since 5:2ing, i.e., it's stopped getting worse! Plus I've added coconut oil to my diet. I now have short hair, which thankfully I love, but the hairdresser has cleverly crafted it to hide my thin patches, which are practically bald!

Hi Tracieknits,
Thanks for redirecting hair loss threat and like to share some tips to reduce hair loss. Exercise regularly to manage stress and avoid touching or pulling your hair. Watch what you eat and take adequate amount of protein through daily meals. Use shampoo and conditioner according to your hair texture and avoid using harsh chemicals. Choose a comfortable hair style and limit alcohol, smoking and caffeine.

No!!!!!!! Hair loss can't be a side effect of this diet. There isn't enough covering up top already! :)

On a serious note though, I have been lucky so far. No additional hair loss noted apart from the normal hereditary loss and stress related loss from the kids

Been 5:2ing since beginning of September and have noticed that I'm shedding more hair than normal when showering. I'm eating around 1500-1700 calories on normal sedentary days and more if I work out, so Its not like II'm not eating enough. I'm only 5'1 so its def enough food for me. Anyone else experiencing this?

This is something that I've been concerned about, as I've always had a good head of hair, but its definitely thinned in the last 6 months. In particular, I seemed to have a bald patch on my right upper temple. However, yesterday morning I suddenly realised its growing back. If you read one of ballerina's blogs, she mentions resumed hair growth. Actually, there are quite a few posts on the subject. A good idea to really pay attention to nutrition on nfds, and bear insulin resistance in mind too when thinking about eating something a  bit naughty.
