a lovely visual exploration of nuts.. and their health benefits

Good news if you love nuts – eating them may help you live longer. People who ate nuts seven or more times a week had a 20 per cent lower death rate compared with those who didn't eat them at all, one major study of more than 118,000 people found. In particular, those consuming nuts were less likely to die of cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease. You could say you'd be nuts not to eat them...

Here's another link hailing the almighty nut....

Since I went low-carb, high-fat I eat a daily portion of almonds, walnuts, pistachios and hazlenuts and I am now finding I get the same "high" from them as I would from chocolate. I love the bit in the article which says that although they are high fat, they think the human body processes that fat differently as people who eat lots of nuts tend to be "lean".....

Hmm, I love nuts too but I couldn't help noticing that my recent two week plateau coincided with a daily nut-fest! Now they were salted cashews, almonds, hazelnuts etc so it could have been the salt, but then again it might have been the extra calories. I now try to limit my daily intake to around 30g (1 handful) and since doing that my weight has started to reduce again. So, yes to eating nuts, but let's be careful, eh?

Here is a comparison chart for different types of nuts and their calorie breakdown.

http://www.calorieking.com.au/foods/portionwatch/?action=viewcat&cat_id=35

When I eat nuts I count them out and then put the bag away so no change of continued nibbling out of the packet.

I have been eating walnuts on my mango and yoghurt and last month was my best monthly weight loss in quite a while.

So we really need to be on the ball when eating nuts and weight/count out exactly how much we are eating.

I sought out the article this was based on http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1307352
Although I'll leave any detailed comment to the experts, I was pleased to read "Results were similar for peanuts and tree nuts", as I have a serious spoon-in-the-peanut-butter-jar habit! It used to be a guilty pleasure, but I now consider it a healthy pleasure - and it hasn't stopped me losing weight.

But I don't indulge on my lean days, so that has cut my consumption down to a max of 5 days a week, and the study shows a significant health gain from 7 vs 5 days a week. Also, despite the statement about peanuts, the figures appear to be better for tree nuts. So I'll try adding a counted number of tree nuts to my lean days. I'm in maintenance, so I should have room to experiment.

Good news then. Looks like I'm going to be living for a very long time. I'm a complete nutter, but only the non-salted variety. Eating almonds and walnuts somehow seems to help with my weightloss.
