Fast-5 Life

I love TED talks and decided to search talks about fasting and found one that I loved! This is the link:

I loved the approach of Bert Herring, how humble he is and how his view about diet is much more than the food we eat. It was very clever to use the acronym D.I.E.T. for "Did I Enrich Today"?

He has a free e-book that talks about fast 5 which is basically a 19:5, 19 hours of fasting and eating within a window of 5 hours everyday. I haven't read the book but I will download it and will check more in detail his website:

thanks for the link, will have a listen when I get a moment.

I've downloaded and read his Fast 5 book. I'm totally happy with 5:2, and find it suits me 100%, but sure that there are people who would find Fast 5 easier and better suited to them.

Brilliant lecture, thanks for posting - what a nice chap! It all makes very good sense, the next thing to try if 16:8 does not work well enough for you...

I like the idea of eating in a 5 hour period but I'll stick with 16:8 and 5:2. I enjoy breakfast and dinner with 16:8 and I don't think I could consistantly stick within a 5 hour period.

Not having read his book, I assume that is the case, though it probably works just as well with 5 days a week and a couple of "free" days.

Hi

I decided to reframe my fasting fail last Monday (my pathetic excuse - final pre-Christmas supermarket trawl) as a Fast-5 day, as I did not cave in until nearly 9 pm. Then what? Try to fast on Christmas eve, or just give up for the week?

No, I managed to Fast-5 for a whole week. I had to move my window to 2 - 7 on Saturday and 12 - 5 on Sunday to accommodate lunch dates but otherwise it went well, suits my evening munchies lifestyle. Lost the 2 lb gain from last week despite the rich goodies I was managing to shovel in during my window.

I can't decide whether to go back to 5:2 or stick with this for a while. I'll see how I feel at 5 tonight.

Happy fasting!

Hi Barbarita,

I do 16/8 every day but the reality is more like 19/5 and often just the one meal in total per day and I find I love this way of life. Yes, you do sometimes have to adjust your 'window' time to accommodate social occasions. I did this a lot over the festive period, quite often not eating til we we got to a party in the evening and I had no problem with it. It is a very individual thing and nothing suits everyone, it works best not to be inflexible but just go with what you feel like on any given day. As long as I have a fasting period every day it don't worry about it. Good luck,

Ballerina x

Welcome @barbarita. :like: I'm giving it a whirl this week whilst away on hol. Like @ballerina suggested, it means I can still be sociable yet not worry too much about when to fast. Be interesting to see how the scales react when I get home

Like Ballerina, I'm doing 16:8 but it often turns into 19:5! As long as I don't overdo the carbs I'm losing weight fairly steadily. I don't generally feel hungry until about 2.30 pm and usually have finished eating for the day by 7.30 pm. Some days it doesn't work out like that...and I have to have lunch earlier or don't get to have dinner until later, but it doesn't seem to matter.

Fast-5 week 2:

Weight loss/gain. Lost 1 lb
Waist size no change

No calorie restriction on any days. I am eating very low carb on what were my 5:2 fast days and in general trying not to go overboard the other days although this week did feature pastry and baked potato!
