Advice from the wise and experinced

I have been prescribed (NSAID) Naproxen for my poor old, and very painful feet! As a result of wearing winklepickers in the 60's I have horrible bunions.

I usually fast 4:3 and try to eat in 16:8 window and also eat low carb. I would like to know how other fasters taking these drugs manage when fasting as they have to be taken with food.

If I had a tablespoon of cream would this be enough (food) to take the tablet whilst not breaking my fast?

Sorry to ramble on but I don't wan't to give myself any more excuses to stop fasting.

Ooh sorry to hear about yr bunions!.i only have small bunions that don't bother me but i do have plantar fasciitis, which makes walking painful
Any kind of foot ailment is annoying, coz getting round easily and painfree is such an important part of life..and of course brisk walking is good exercise..
Little did any of us realise that we were storing up trouble with our pointy stilettoes!
Your medication..does it state that you have to take it mornings? I dont really have an answer..unless taking it with a small amount of milk? Many fasters,16:8 ers etc here allow themselves a trickle/ splash of milk in tea/ coffee, in the hope/ belief it wont damage the fast ..strictly speaking it does, but i always have a cuppa on a fast day at about 1 pm,and have still lost weight. With cream might be ok too coz i know someone here who' ll occasionally have a little cream to keep her going.
First tho,if not sure, perhaps check with pharmacist if you can take medi later in the day.
Ps BTW i am not wise or experienced as you can prob guess!

@Slimmer If you need your pills 2 or 3 times daily incuding your fastdays then you'll need to find a few low cal snacks too take them with ie:: a plateful of salad leaves including a stick of celery then an oxo later to have with your pills.
I was on the very same pills as you I took mine as and when needed but since my start of 5:2 especially my weightloss the good news is that I've managed to drop those tablets completely.
I really hope and wish you the same results. :clover: :clover: :clover:

Thank you for your replies CandiceMarie and SueQ. I am to take one tablet twice a day but I hope not to have to take them forever, just until this flare up is reduced.

I suspect I will have to experiment and see how I feel over the next few days.

How many do you need to take' and what dose?
I ask As if it's not many, I'd have a small meal/morsel of food or decent drink with them. Taking on an empty stomach has been proven to cause stomach irritations and ulcers.
I have a strong stomach so was always ok with this, but all that said, this guide is to protect the more sensitive amongst us. Also long term use of strong doses of NSAIDs (or Ibuprofen) will definitely require thought.
You can still fast with small regular meals.

Ooh just a thought maybe a liquid fast might help here! :starving:

Personally, I would have a hard boiled egg. It's 70 calories for a large egg, and it would be enough for me.

Good luck!

Hi Slimmer, I might be landing from a different angle. Dire arthritis in one knee, useless support and advice from GP/hospital so I took it in my own hands (no meds - they were never offered) and lost weight and reduced inflaming carbs - and the pain has gone! So yes take the meds with food as others advise (I drink copious amounts of milk in tea and sparkling water) and fast and hopefully your body will repair. Mine did. I guess at some point you will need to make a decision meds V fasting, reduce the med? Are meds working or fasting, or both. Fasting changed my life, not meds, but they do work for others. I hope that helps you. Look forward to hearing how you get on. Lizbean :clover:

Maybe a wee chat with the local pharmacist in the chemist? They are usually very good and can offer really practical advise.

Thank you all for your advice. I hope this is just a short course to reduce the inflammation and therefore the severe pain. My plan is to carry on fasting, 16:8 with low carbs next week and have my usual one milk coffee in the morning plus a couple of teaspoons in another coffee mid morning when I will take the first tablet. The second is not a problem as I always have food each evening. I am also to take a gastric protector though I do have the stomach of an ox!

We are off on holiday with friends next Friday and I had already decided to do 16:8 every day. Fortunately our friends are not big or frequent eaters, though they do enjoy a drink!

Happy New Year one and all.

I am back, although I don't know for how long. We are due to return fro our long break in USA with our son and family and when we get back I am due to start steroids for PMR which was diagnosed just before we left. I was given a steroid injection to tide me over which frankly did not help much.

My question is, does anyone fast whilst taking oral steroids and, if so, what do you take first thing in the morning when you take your meds?
I gather that I will probably gain weight and will have to continue the treatment for over a year, and am feeling more than a little concerned about the weight gain.

Sorry to waffle on but I hope one of you will be able to answer my questions.Thank you

Hi Slimmer
When I started on 5:2, I had taken various tablets on a regular basis, some with food previously, but now I take them with Rachel's Organic vanilla yogurt (90 cals per 100g) and count it in with my fasting allowance.
I know it's not sugar free but some of the other low sugar/low fat taste detestable to me, give me taste any day.
It's like having butter, I cannot abide any type of margarine
