My Before & 'During' Progress Pics

Hello!

I'm Lucy & I'm new to the forums & relatively new to the 5:2 lifestyle (just over 2 weeks to be exact). Thought it would be motivating to have a little space which I can keep updated with progress pics, maybe every 2 weeks depending on if there is progress to see!

I am very pleased with my 8lb weight loss so far (even if it is now static, everything has stabilised so I think I'm looking at going 'slow & steady' for now) so now I'm just going to plod along! Am very excited to join the forums so that I can have a read of everyone else's experiences too :)

A couple more photos on my blog:

I've updated my blog with my week 4 progress pics - not as dramatic as week 2 but I thought I would post them here to stay accountable (otherwise I find I can easily become more lax ;) ). Weight loss has stabilised (total 9 lbs) though even when it was static my measurements were still shrinking so that's reassuring. Going to try & do a 4:3 week this week!

Happy Monday everyone :)

Dear fasting doctor,

One thing I really hope you will keep in mind as you continue with your own weight loss is that your experience with a diet as a fundamentally very healthy and very young person is going to be much different than that of your patients who are older and who have underlying metabolic conditions that make weight loss more challenging.

I find it very depressing how many doctors who fall into the young, healthy and usually male categories, write books based on their personal experiences with dieting that imply that anyone can experience their results if they just try.

I remember being in my late 20s and early 30s and wondering how older women could let themselvesg o so much. In my 40s, I learned why when I became an older woman. Now the effort it takes me in my 60s to maintain a normal weight is literally 20 times what it was in my 20s. But I read books by diet doctors that imply that anyone not losing isn't really trying. I have also heard from quite a few people who were treated by high profile book-writing doctors who were accused of noncompliance when, in fact, these doctors missed important diagnoses, like in one case, LADA.

Medicine selects for people with very healthy metabolisms, because other people can't get through that rigorous, sleep-deprived training. So books written by doctors are rarely very useful for those of us who face metabolic challenges. Unfortunately, publishers favor MDs when publishing books because the credential looks so impressive. The only MD whose books I have ever found realistic about diet and metabolism is Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, and that is because he actually lives with the condition he writes about and has since the 1940s. Unlike every other author who writes about his topic (diabetes and diet) he knows that even doing everything right it is very hard to make any diet work. I wish other doctors could learn from him!

Hi @peebles thank you so much for voicing your thoughts & concerns. I am somewhat mortified that anyone would interpret the publication of my own progress as dismissive in any way towards other people of ANY age or size. I acknowledge the forums as a way to stay accountable & receive support, nothing more, nothing less. I am not a doctor who plans to write any books concerning the 'correct' way to lose weight or how to carry out the 5:2 lifestyle or the like, I am merely a medic new in the world of 5:2 with a vague interest in the science behind it.

Although I am still in my 20s, I can appreciate the difficulties people have with losing weight whether they are older, have complex medical histories or are exposed to various factors both genetic and environmental. I consider myself open-minded & non-discriminatory towards anyone irrelevant to weight, age, race, social class etc. I would never in a million years dream of labelling someone as 'not really trying' & if any one has experienced that in the medical world then I apologise on behalf of medical staff.

So, I apologise if you find the documentation of my experiences doing the 5:2 lifestyle depressing. This is not my aim (if anything, I would want to inspire people to try it out & get creative in the kitchen!) & if this is the case I urge you to not visit my blog.

Take care,

Lucy
