Thanks so much to everyone for all the information and encouragement. In the past WW was the only diet that had actually worked for me, but the weight slowly crept back. Now that I am post menopausal AND recently retired (think less activity) the battle seemed futile. I have always been aware of appearance though and as a shorty, even 15 lbs makes a big difference. Enter a style blogger who introduced the 5:2 concept. Frankly, I thought this was unhealthy until I watched Dr. Mosely's video and read his book. I started three weeks ago and am still learning a lot, adjusting and readjusting fine=tuning the 5:2 for me. It is making so much sense. I have actually lost a little in that time and given my track record, that is very good. So I am now tentatively excited. Good luck to all of us! :clover:

Hi @sidney it works! On my way to maintaining soonish, never dieted (my weight crept up over 2 decades), though I did fast in my early years - seemed natural. I'm a shorty too - 22 lbs and no one has noticed, that does not matter as I'm doing this for me, no one else. Health benefits are great. If you have stressful times in your life try reign it in and be mindful. See you soon.

What a great post simcoe. Thanks!

I have been an on again off again member of Weight Watchers for most of my adult life, but I realize that for me it's just not sustainable. I just can't count those points every single day for the rest of my life! Thanks for the reminder about counting EVERYTHING! Yes, no more "free" veggies...everything counts!

Thank you for the advice in the first post. I'm on my third week of IF, having lost 2½lbs in the first two weeks..... although I do get on the scales every day, my definitive "weight loss for the week" will be determined on the morning of my first day of fast.... so I won't know how well I've done on average until Monday.
My main reason for IF is the weight loss, but closely followed by reducing cholesterol and improving insulin sensitivity. I'm intrigued to see what my annual blood test results are in a few months time...!

Thanks a lot for that!
I am a Newbie and just started reading through this forum. This is very helpful!
Actually I had the idea of IF already about 15 years ago (never tried it, though), because I thought it might be a good idea to confuse the metabolism. Now other people are making money out of it... LOL.
I find it easier to fast than to reduce calories every day. And yes, I get hungry! But I also know that the next day I am allowed to eat, that makes it easier.

Hello all,
Starting today with the 5:2 fast, coming Friday being my first fast day. As someone who never eats breakfast and sometimes has the first meal for the day at 3 pm I hope I am somewhat prepared. I have never done an official diet but was intrigued by FastDay because it pointed out some things I have found to be true through experience:
1. Fasting seems easier than dieting
2. Exercise delays hunger (counter intuitive but confirmed over and over).
Soooo, starting with a weight of 143 lbs (waist 35") I hope to reach my goal of 135 lbs (waist 32) within a reasonable time frame.
Oh oh, too optimistic? Would love some feedback from the old-timers here :)

Welcome @Alli !

Too optimistic? Not really. At your current weight and estimating your height at 5' 3" (160 cm) or greater places your BMI in the normal range. As we get closer to our ideal weight - whatever that is, and no one ever really knows - the rate of weight loss tends to slow down. But that still leaves room for improvement.
