Luv it. Along similar lines there's a saying: "You are what you eat.", So perhaps you should eat a skinny person?

The gist of the article is that 84% of a unit of body fat is biochemically converted into carbon dioxide which is exhaled when we breathe. The remaining 16% is water which is excreted in the usual ways.

To read the detailed science beyond the article and my one line summary, click this link below (also from in the original article).

Isn't this exactly what you would expect given how cell respiration works. Respiration IS that fuel burning we always hear about.

If we burn more than we eat, we lose weight. If we eat enough to supply cell needs we burn the food we eat and store the rest. In any case what we burn turns into water and CO2 once our mitochondria have done their magic. I'm baffled as to why this is supposed to be news.

I don't understand why the articles states that conservation of mass is violated when both energy and heat - the overwhelming selection of those questioned - are obvious and necessary byproducts of metabolism.

It's hard to tell by the bar graph if the accululated totals for Other, Faeces, Muscle and Don't knows would exceed the sum for Energy/Heat, Co2, Urine/sweat to indicate an ignorance level that needs correction.

Nits...

Were they debunking a straw man? I think the yahoo article about this study had some quotes from the researchers.

I thought the same as you, peebles.

Anyway, I'm not going to say I lost weight anymore. I'm going to say I exhaled it.
