100km and 5:2

I finally did my 100km race and I can only say that things went a lot better than expected.
Last year I did the same race in 12 hours and 27 minutes and this year my hopes were to improve that time of 15/20 minutes dreaming to go below the 12 hours mark.
Things didn't look good weatherwise since the forecast was giving heavy rain for the whole day and infact on Saturday it started to rain at around 9am and by the time the race started at 3pm we were (2000 of us) all soaked wet. It was not the ideal weather, even more if you know you are going to run under these circumstances for more than 12 hours. My hopes to improve the time vanished, but this is a race you do to finish because it is already an achievement to get to the finish line so nothing could put me back.
Race started and the rain kept pouring down for the first 4/5 hours and afterwards with regular intervals and with the night approaching it got quite cold, but I was prepared.
I knew I was prepared, not as much I would have liked to, but I had my homework done. So I settled on a nice pace and with time I realised I was doing good and not feeling tired or having aches somewhere in my body.
To make things short I finished my race and I did it in an incredible time: 10 hours and 42 minutes.
1 hour and 45 minutes faster than last year.
I was and am right now amazed for what I have achieved. Probably without the rain I would have done it in 10.30 qualifying in this way to a race that is a dream of mine: the Spartathlon.
Hopefully I will get the spot another time.
I know that such results can be achieved with training, a lot of mental strenght, but I give a lots of credits to the 5:2 diet.
I started the race weighing 74kg and having all those kilos off my tummy has certainly given me that extra edge to run better, easier and faster.
The diet didn't prevent me to train properly or race below my expectations. On the contrary I achieved an amazing result thanks to the weight loss I had.
Right now I am dancing around my target weight I set at the beginning of the diet, but would like to loose something more and therefore should pay a bit more attention to my fast days as I did when I started, but for sure I know how to keep the weight now.
