Raw Karen's Blog

Being More Alkaline

by rawkaren on 22 Nov 2014, 15:14

Since my last blog, I got my saliva test results back. I had wanted to better understand what might be contributing to my slow rate of loss. I have been on another forum where they were following the kind of IF protocol I had been on for the month. We had all pretty much started together. People were losing 7 to 10lbs. My loss was 1lb. It was making me sad and frustrated.
My tests showed that my cortisol was on the low end - a sign of adrenal exhaustion which is hardly surprising given the year I have had. My DHEA-S was slightly high which is unusual in this combination. Whilst a strong DHEA-S score is great when you are very young, in could be signs of insulin resistance in someone older. So it was such a contradiction I just did not know what to do for the best.
So I stopped fasting, gave up caffeine and gave up being low carb. I wanted to reduce the stress on my adrenals before I started to have major problems. I have also been taking an adrenal support formula. I felt better after the first two doses. People often feel euphoric on ketogenic diets - I just felt crap, but at least I had no brain fog.

For the first two and a half weeks I have eaten what I want, but the last week I have been eating more alkaline promoting foods and to try and reduce the acidity in my body. Removing coffee is a big one, but upping my greens and vegetables, and reducing my protein. I'm still not eating grains but can eat avocados with great abandon! My mood has stabilized, I'm not craving and I feel well enough to try fasting again. I have completely ignored the scale (I'm expecting a gain given I had nearly 3 weeks of not fasting), but frankly I'd rather feel well before putting pressure on my adrenals again.
One tip I learned from the other forum is to have some himalyan mineral salt in water first thing in the morning to help the adrenals. It is something I have continued to do and it does seem to make a difference to how I feel.
