Leeks and Rhubarb

by michele on 01 May 2013, 08:12

Pulled a whole bunch of leeks from my allotment yesterday and used them to make Hairy Dieters Chicken and Ham Tangle Pie, but without the ham. Tasty! The slightly soggy bits of filo pastry at the bottom have a hint of those Fray Bentos pie-in-a-tin-at-3473636378 calories a mouthful. I think that was a good thing- though the fact that I am still thinking about the aforementioned pie in a tin, perhaps not.

Also have 3 tons of rhubarb. Now I like a crumble and custard as much as the next person, but unless I am supplying a school canteen for a week I don't think even I could get through all that. I have discovered that some people eat it raw in salad-just thin slices I presume otherwise it might take the skin off the inside of ones mouth. I have found out Rhubarb and Vanilla Jam is lovely in ones porridge and that some more inventive/less wholesome people mash it up in vodka, add a bit of lemon zest and cinnamon and get an almost liqueur of some repute-I am going to try that and leave it til Christmas :)

Apart from that am stepping onto the annual roller coaster of small successes and big disappointments that is planting at an allotment. Can't be worse than the biblical conditions of last year right? A year in which the slugs grew to epic horror film proportions and the top soil slid off the terraces leaving sprouts, beetroots, swedes scarcely clinging to the surface. Don't get me wrong- the frisson of excitement when one sees the little green shoots appear and taste of the soup made of three mangy turnips and some beetle chewed spinach is all worth it. Definitely. I think. Yes.

Perhaps I should use slug pellets- I am told that on account of last years optimum paradise for slugs and snails there undoubtedly will be a baby boom. But I can't bring myself to enjoy the growing so much, nor the end result, when my eyes alight on those little blue pellets. So grit, beer, copper strips, gel and this new product made of wool will have to do. Perhaps I could get paid for experimentation. This year it will be fine. Yes.

Can't you get those earth worm friendly pellets? They aren't blue. Don't tolerate slugs! Lovely idea for the rhubarb. In the Southern Hemisphere I have just harvested my pumpkins and planted peas and broad beans. My pumpkins are ripening on an outside table. I am hoping tonight won't be the first frost of the season. OH stayed up til 3am making quince paste.

I have some ones made from wool now, some non toxic gel and some grit. Going to see what works best! The trouble with more earth friendly pellets is that they wash away if there is a spot of rain. Which happens a lot here as you will know. So they do work but there must be constant vigilance. Thanks for your thoughts though!
LOVE quince paste- well worth it!

I wish I lived closer so that I could take some of that rhubarb off your hands! Love rhubarb crumble and just stewed rhubarb too, always instantly takes me back to my childhood. That rhubarb vodka sounds pretty good too... Am going to try and grow some in my garden - rhubarb, that is! : )

I really like the tangyness of it! is fairly easy to grow I think, just cares for itself, but it is very watery, so you'd have to get busy with the hose I reckon!
