Porridge question
11 Apr 2013, 16:28
Hi there! I hope this is in the right section. I bought a big bag of scottish porridge oats from Tesco, and the packaging says that 50g is equal to 185 calories. I measured it out, added water and managed to get a huge bowl of stodgy, filling porridge! Adding some sweetener to it means a large meal for less than 200 calories = amazing. However I'm now wondering if it's too good to be true, would the packaging mean 50g of cooked/prepared porridge is 185 calories, or am I right and they just mean 50g of the oats? If so, this is a brilliant way to have a filling break/lunch on a fast day!

(utterly boring question I know, apologies, but it may apply to other things we cook from scratch)

I just happen to have a bog of Tesco Porridge Oats in my cupboard and have checked for you. Your calculations are absolutely correct! Oats make a brilliant breakfast and keep you full for a good long time.

If in doubt, check out the per 100g weight on packaging because that is often helpful in clearing up questions about raw or cooked weight issues and is usually (but not always - so read the column heading carefully) for the food item in its 'as sold' state. Hope this helps.

You two are amazing, I didn't expect a response so quickly, let alone such intelligent ones. Many thanks
