Is there such a tool?...
30 Apr 2013, 10:12
I wonder if any of you know of a recipe building tool, not the calories in a recipe, but more a recipe idea?

Basically, I know what ingredients I want to use, but I'd like to be able to put them into a form and get some ideas on what I could make with them - does this make sense at all

Any help would be great - I'm hopeless at deciding what to make

Didn't some clever young man just come up with an app for that? Can't for the life of me remember what it's called... Something like whisk maybe?

I always have success when googling recipes by typing in the major two components, say for example, 'chicken and tomato'. Makes me wonder why I collect recipe books so enthusiastically really...

Hi there,

I use taste.com.au - if, say, I wanted a recipe for something that had beef and pesto in it, I search "+beef +pesto" and the options come up.
I think you can also specify if you don't like a particular ingredient ie
+beef +pesto -carrot

Hope that helps

My friends and my mum use me. They call me, tell me what they've got and expect me to come up with a gourmet recipe with one egg, a piece of cheese, a carrot and baked beans...

allrecipes.com allows you to put in what ingredients you have and what you want to exclude and then it will pull up recipes that meet your needs.

I use BBC Good Food website and app. You can also use the advanced search to filter by other criteria, time, calories, course etc. I wouldn't be without it, use it all the time

Brown the chicken with the mushrooms, onions and lots of garlic (perhaps add a splash of white wine) and serve it with the mixed veggies.
Or, if you also have some tomato paste, chop the chicken into very small pieces, brown them with the onions, garlic, mushrooms, add the paste, a little water and the chilli flakes and make a nice chilli which can be also served with the mixed veggies.

Thanks Nikki & TML13 - probably shouldn't have started a thread about what I'm going to be eating later - I'm starving now lol :-)

So TML I am agog with curiosity about what gourmet recipe you came up with with these ingredients.

If you are as avid a cookbook collector as I am, there is a fantastic website that lets you catalog your books and search for recipes from your own books by ingredient. It's called www.eatyourbooks.com. I have cookbooks from the US and the UK and it catalogs both, might do Australia too. What I like about it is if I search for a recipe with, say, "courgettes", it will also throw up recipes from my US books with "zucchini". You have to subscribe and I think the subscription is $25/£15 per year, but to me it's worth it. I get so many ideas and rediscover cookbooks I might not have touched in years.
