Hairy dieters recipes
12 Feb 2013, 21:40
I'm surprised that nobody seems to have mentioned the Hairy Bikers' diet recipes. We've been using them since before we started 5:2, and find them very tasty. They are all calorie counted, and quite a few of them come in low enough to be OK for a fast day.

We particularly liked the sweet and sour chicken with a bit of rice for 350 cals, and the Spanish style chicken bake at 370 cals.

Most of them are on the BBC web site; Google is your friend.

I made the sweet & sour, expecting a small portion & it was huge. Nice.

I've mentioned the book before. Got it as a Christmas present and I love it. So many recipes in one book that I want to make. On a Sunday and Wednesday I make something making sure I have enough left over for the following fast days. Last Sunday Paprika Chicken, tomorrow their Chilli.

By coincidence I have just ordered this from Amazon before reading the post!
All though there seems to be quite a few recipes that can be used on fast days (getting fed up with hubbies stir frys) I thought it would be good just to be calorie aware on eat days?

As me and hubby both just eat one meal on fast days, our evening meals are the same for both feasting and fasting days, so I can quite happily make something from here whatever day of the week it is and just fill up on veggies.

I found it for just a fiver from a local Book People sale. Best - and most used- bargain I've bought in a long time! Really love the book - all the food in it looks so appealing!

I have the book from the library but the only thing I tried (museli bar squares) was not a success and has put me off a little. Which recipes have people tried and found to be a success. Thanks :D

I've had the Spanish chicken bake several times, very very nice and easy to do. I've also added a couple of half corn cobs into the tray, as I love oven baked corn.

Now what do you know this book just jumped into my basket! Now on my kindle.
I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes. They look fab.
Not being in the uk I didn't know they'd lost weight and written this book.
Thank you emseedee for bringing it to my attention.

Spanish chicken, paprika chicken, sweet & sour chicken, meat & veg pies (made with pizza base mix!), chilli, spag bol. Probably missed a few but I've done all of these more than once and they are fab. The pies are a great hit in our house. I double up and make 12 at a time and freeze them. I serve them with some sprouts or brocolli and a little gravy, yum. Portion sizes are generous as well and all calorie counted. The next one on my list to try is the quick thai curry.

We're having the spanish chicken for the first time tonight - our only meal on a fasting day so will try the suggestion of adding some half corn on the cobs to bump up the calories. YUM!
I've made the chicken and mushroom risotto (really creamy and lovely, would definitely make again) and also the crispy chicken (my favourite so far I think, really made one chicken breast into something substantial and really flavoursome and delicious!)

Ok, crispy chicken might be my next one on the list.

All this talk about food on a fast day is making my tummy rumble!
Just as well I've got some fizzy water on hand. Lol

I really like the Hairy Dieters, and used their book a lot before I started 2:5, BUT when I checked and calorie counted some of the recipes (using online calorie resources) they were higher than stated...I'm not sure quite how that works! Still, they're great recipes to use for the 5 days when not fasting, and some (maybe with tweaks) for the fast days. I've just started this regime, (had two fast days) but I can see that there is potential to keep it up!
