Caloric discrepancies in Quorn
04 Aug 2013, 13:18
I am brand new to Quorn, and will be trying it in todays recipe, but I am a bit disturbed about the bit of calorie differences in various sites.

On the Quorn site it says:
http://www.quorn.us/products/61/grounds
110 calories for 85g, (3 ounces)

but on Calorie count says this 90 calories for 3 ounces

and on Calorie King it says the same, 90 calories for 3 ounces

Why is there a discrepancie, and what should I consider correct? Im assuming the Quorn site?

When trying to fit 500 calories in a day, even that 20 cal difference can matter..
What does the calorie count on the package say? That's the count I use first before getting it from another source. Each manufacturer has their own recipe to make quorn so will have different calorie counts.
Really? I thought Quorn was a brand name. It's that not correct? Are there other brands/ makers of quorn?

I guess I'll check the package. If the calories are in fact 110 for 3oz, I may as well use ground turkey breast. It has more protein, the same calories, and easier to find
Quorn itself is a brand name. But it's also become the generic name for meat-substitute products because it's so popular. Such as Coke has, it's a brand name, but it's also in common use as a noun for any soda/fizzy drink beverage. So this may the problem you have run into, people are putting values for other brands, but lumping it under quorn because thats how they name it.
The basic faux meat fungus-derived protein of Quorn is used in a lot of products - see http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style ... 31757.html - so scope for entries in online databases to refer to different products and markets.

Stick to the label, or the manufacturer / supermarket web site as a fall-back.
Ok the mystery continues. So for the Quorn brand product in the USA called grounds, it is 110 cals for 3 ounces (85g), while the Quorn brand mince in the UK is about 90 cals for 85g (3 oz)

What is adding 20 cals to the USA version?

WHY do they DO that? Ughh very frustrating
Lol, did we add sugar? ;)

Hmmmm courisor and courisor, it appears that there are fewer ingredients in the american version.
Who knows??

But its also odd how you have to do the math to compare same size servings, (as well as do the metric conversion)

Here is the US Quorn Grounds

And here is the UK Quorn Mince

WHY do they DO this to us, just to make life MORE confusing and challenging?
Diane, just make your recipe and try it, you can always switch it up later. The few cals different shouldn't really make that much difference in the short term. :)
YA I know Betsy , I guess I just like stuff to make sense.. thats why I have such hard time in this world, cuz so few things DO :)

Plus always looking for things to keep my occupied on fast days, so my mind doesnt turn to food

Its 2:33 in my world, and all Ive had is coffee, water, and Mio, and feeling pretty ok, but would LOVE to eat something. But I'll hold out for my hopefully yummy dinner of roast garlic cauliflower soup and my zoodles bolognese :)

Trying to pry my husband out of the recliner to maybe take a ride, and go to Sams club to stock up on some supplies we need.
How did the zoodies bol turn out ?
turned out great. between the roast garlic cauliflower soup and the zoodles bol. i was stuffed
